In my continuing trawl through the trashiest of this yearās summer blockbusters, yesterday we saw Suicide Squad.
This was a ludicrously violent & silly DC comics superhero film, with the āheroesā having questionable & slightly crappy attributes. As with many of these films this summer, thereās obviously a clever, knowing & slightly sick mind behind the ideas & in this case, a surprisingly critical message about US foreign policy underneath it all.
You can only laugh at the cynicism & brutality that is normalised by these films. Itās hard to imagine what effect they have on wider audiences but at least there hadnāt been a local mass shooting just prior to seeing this one whereas there had been a couple of weeks ago.
I ask myself why would I watch this kind of shite (I wouldnāt have if it were being shown on TV) Actually, given that Iād said Iād take Harry to the cinema, the alternative was actually the apparently much more violent & not even funny Rise of the footsoldier: Origins. Suicide Squad seems to have been a harmless comedy caper by comparison.
I read a review this morning suggesting that this genre of (superhero) films was shuddering to a halt & this film indicated the start of the transition to something else.
I certainly see the rise of āAnti heroā Deadpool, Venom, Suicide Squad etc. It seems the moral high-ground of squeaky clean āSupermanā no longer holds allure for the teen audience. You are correct the level of visual violence kids experience though gaming / films etc surpasses my experience as a kid considerably. It seems difficult with my own kids to anchor reality by pointing out: āitās just a storyā (When the special effects are so realistic), or āthatās not normalā (Extreme casual violence) when they are surrounded by powerful messaging to the contrary.
