What I'm watching (Part 1)

That is the worst one in my opinion. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

One of the many, many things on my list to watch.

It’s clever and thought provoking.

You are in for a treat. I will say no more :sunglasses:

I enjoyed the first episode of the new series of detectorists and the Beeb’s new take on Howard’s End… except.

In all BBC dramas now there seems to be a quota requirement for black actors and actresses. I’ve no objection to black actors and actresses but the way they are used and the frequency with which they appear in many period dramas means that they stand out as what seems like tokenism. In contemporary dramas set in modern Britain the numbers of BAME actors and actresses quite rightly reflect the demographic spread as it is now. But in dramas set in the early 20th century or indeed the 19th & 18th centuries it just looks contrived. Of course there would have been some (a few) black people living and working in Britain back in the first decade of the 20th century and earlier but watching recent dramas such as Taboo, Dickensian adaptations & even Poldark I’m sure they appear and are featured more prominently than would’ve been the case. It jars because it looks implausible and smacks of meeting quotas. Does anyone know if broadcasters are obliged to meet quotas regardless of context?

No idea about any quotas. It doesn’t really matter what colour these actors are. These are works of fiction brought to screen.

Not sure you’re allowed to say actresses these days. Actors are now genderless apparently…

Fed up of political correctness.

It matters to me, just as I wouldn’t want the portrayal to feature an unrepresentative number of giants, aliens, small people, transgender people, Inuits etc. It distracts from what is being watched & looks like unnecessary virtue signalling

Yeah let’s keep it realistic, so that if the part calls for a eunuch, the actors have to lop off their bollocks :+1:

Eunuchs in porn. It’s unlikely to catch on tbh. :grinning:

I suggest a strongly worded email to Points Of View then…

How charmingly naive. As if the BBC ever responds to criticism. :grinning:
Newswatch is actually the worst culprit for this. They never, ever admit they’ve covered anything inappropriately or insensitively.

Ah Newswatch, I miss Raymond Snoddy.

Finding more ways of doing less of it better.

both Louise and I watched this carefully as it is one of our favourite books. But until I saw this thread neither of us realised there were black actors in it.

Thought it was one of the last places where they still used the terms, of course pinching their arses is a bit of a no-no at the moment though.

The maid? Some guests at Margaret’s Bloomsbury style gathering. People in the street. The wife of Leonard Bast? There were quite a few.

nope nothing - I just asked Louise and she didn’t notice either.
