What I'm watching (Part 1)

Still working through the seasons - end of S2 at the moment.

Horizon BBC2

Jupiter Wow!

@Valvebloke All the lasers 40 minutes in, turning Hydrogen from a gas to a metal

Havenā€™t seen it yet (I had it on record while I watched Mark Kermode do ā€˜Scence Fictionā€™ on BBC4).

As I was getting out of laser science 7-8 years ago metallic hydrogen was, potentially at least, coming within reach of the very biggest lasers (ours included). BBC science programmes had an irritating tendency to fly their reporters all the way to the US to report on stuff there, even when it might be as much as a year or two behind what was going on 50 miles west of London (a year or two can be a long time in laser science). But in some areas they were ahead too. And their big laser really is bigger than anyone elseā€™s (and more over budget, and late, and not capable of doing what it was built for). Itā€™s bloody impressive to walk around though.

So much dialogue from that film is stuck in my head. Seen it many times. Love the theme tune from Lalo Schifrin.
