I am an old fashioned motor racing fan who is really into the cars. I don’t think there ever has been a big potential pool of fans like me.
OTOH normal people who have zero interest in things mechanical but are fully paid up celebrity-fuckers are being feted by the new owners in order to increase the amount of money they make.
Drive to survive is a completely false visions of what it actually is, but is popular and increasing the fan base. Never underestimate greed

I have found myself becoming less and less interested.
I used to analyse the info I got and could work out how the cars differed and why one had an advantage. I’m no engineer but I tried to learn from a layman’s point of view what was what.
I loved the racing, and I loved the politics (ever since the FISA/FOCA war).
I find I am now drifting away to become a passive viewer. I still get my Autosport, something I have been doing religiously for 30+ years, but find myself breezing through it rather that poring over every word.
I am unlikely to cry off an event to watch a race these days. In fact, I prefer the highlights packages.
‘tis sad that F1 has become F1 Lite on it’s way to single seater oblivion.

I lost interest several years ago, unfortunately. It all feels extremely contrived these days and, as you say, just geared towards making more money via the celebrity spectacle rather than engaging with people who enjoy the engineering and racing.

This sums it up for me as well. I think the process started for me when they got rid of pedal operated clutches and went to paddle-shift 'boxes. I completely get that new tech gets developed in the crucible of F1 and benefits the industry, consumers etc, also that much of the work, aero in particular, does actually make the cars quicker, but driver skill seems much less significant and the politics + stage show / monetizing of the whole circus just turns me off
