What type of sound are you looking for compared to the AN and Elrogs?
or conversely, what would you say they did in your system differently from each other?
The initial need is more of having a back up pair of tubes as unfortunately one of the pair of AN’s failed the other day - scared the bejesus out of me…
So the AN’s are a pretty rounded presenter of the music, with good detail, very good top extension and nice low end but could be more extended, overall very happy with them.
The Elrog’s are aging and as much I’m very happy with the way they sound, I am conscious of the age.
Sound wise they are a little weightier than the AN’s but not quite as detailed.
So ideally I’d want a little more weight (low end) and the overall presentation, but with a lot of musicality.
I’m considering the ER242’s which are the Moly plate version of the ER211’s.
But i also hear good things of some of the LinLais and Psvanes.
tbh I am surprised that the Elrogs had more weight in the bottom than the ANs, as I found them very detailed and pretty but lacking in scale, weight and bass power.
Personally I much preferred the old GE VT4C I had. RCA 211 are reputedly the ones to get, but I haven’t heard any, and the price means I probably wont.
If you want to look at new ones, the Kron KR211 could be worth a look
Which Elrogs did you listen to - Gen 1’s with the Brass base or the new Black Base ones? Mine are the older Brass Based ones.
I think the precision of the bass is better on the ANs but felt the ER211’s had just a little more extension - not earth shaking I admit.
I’ve never heard an older tubes, GE’s are fairly easy to come by and some say very much on a par with the AN’s. Yes RCA’s and United Electronics get a lot of praise but as you say the price and ‘scarcity’ means I’ll probably never hear them either…
Gen 1 with brass base from 2015 when I had a pair of Cary 805C monos. I really liked the clarity and fine detail, but I just didnt get the musical enjoyment I was looking for, I much preferred the GE pair I had in this regard, even if they didn’t do all the super hi-res hifi type stuff.
So, I’ve now got a pair Psvane 211T MkII’s on the way and I’ve followed up on the GE’s so hope to end up with a little bit of ‘pick n mix’ as well as some good back up if any go pear shaped.
