3D printing horns

I think that my preference for the IWATA there would be to print it in three pieces, rather than two. Then there wouldn’t be the seam down the middle - should perform better, I think?

D’you mean Axially ie three 120 degree sections?

No, do a big central piece with two equal wings either side

Getting a really nice surface finish on my JMOD 2.0 3d printed throat adaptors using the required PET-g filament has been a little tricky (It’s easy with PLA) because of this I have reworked the design to go from one to six pieces , it’s worked out very well. The main aim was to enable the four petals to be machined in wood .Paul the cabinet maker I’m using mentioned Sapele yesterday which seemed spooky cos that wood was mentioned by Chris about Parquet flooring a few days before. The petals have a 4mm hole so dowels can be used. The fit is perfect.

I just use PLA. I know it’s not as tough, but I haven’t experienced any issues. So the benefits (easy to print well, much more eco friendly etc) make it as easy choice for me.

I agree fully that PLA is fine for our uses but in the case of the JMOD 2.0 I did not want to use PLA when in the plan it says "do not use PLA " - I suspect the main reason for that is that for outdoor use in the summer it will get very hot PLA is a not suitable material . Even though I’m not planning outdoors use myself , If I come to sell them in the future it might deter buyers.

Could just be that PLA won’t like getting wet much. Be nice to know the actual reason they put that warning!

I recall reading a DIYaudio guy having had PLA prints go soft / melt in the hot US summers.

Ha ha ha! For indoor hobby use it should be fine, but yes, it gets hot in stone parts of the USA

Heat deformation is the most likely reason

Yeah I do remember the designer talking about it on his instagram stories a while ago. As it’s a professional design it’s for a hot club pumping out serious dB for long periods of time. The designer often does outdoor shows too and they live in some hot part of America.
They did also talk about it being stronger than ABS and some others they recommended if you can’t get PETG.

I guess for us it would be ‘fine’ to use PLA, but who wants fine?

You asked, and I told you!

I have been busy printing various smaller horn flares and getting more competent at adjusting the models. In parallel it looks like I have sold seventy 6-1/2 speakers and got a commission to 3d print 12 flares.
I spotted a little 3d printed flare on bay £99 a pair!! Found the model online
made a pair for £2.50 - Then stuck them on ebay for fun and sold em the same day for £23

Was looking at this yesterday but thinking it’d be more fun/easier to get a printed one.

Quite a collection!

What could you print Multi Entry Horn wise?
HF mount / throat down to locations for MF drivers, from where some other bigger construction would take over?

How dead to resonance are they?
