Never seen the APT-E Gas Turbine running, although I have seen it in the flesh at the National Railway Museum in York. I believe it’s now at their outpost in Shildon, and volunteers have restored it to a level some of the tilt kit works.
I did see the APT-P Electric prototype on a test run at Crewe circa 1981/2. This was the full double power car setup and was an impressive sight. Many will have seen the remaining bits of it passing the Crewe Heritage site on the site of the old Crewe North Signal Box.
A site run by a chap who was involved in lots of BR testing including the APT-P. It’s a very internet mk 1 site, but full of interesting stuff. This is the APT-P subpage.
Absolutely love this clip, a young trainspotter called Francis with Chris Harris. Excellently made and a joy to see Francis’ genuine and infectious passion. Worth 20 mins
Fax was the upgrade from semaphore when they realised they could sack all the flag wavers and make more money for the shareholders without actually improving the service.
