AA Train thread

Was at ‘The Greatest Gathering’ in Derby yesterday for the 200th anniversary bash at Alstom’s works. If you like this kind of a thing it was fucking AMAZING - I was on the hoof from 9.30am until 5pm and am still feeling it today - literally didn’t sit-down, didn’t even eat!

Some pics, first one says it all:

Please elaborate.

Looks fab, my late dad would have been in seventh heaven.

…And that was a fraction of what was there!

Wow, my F-i-L would absolutely love that. Is something like it yearly ?

Yep, every 200 years :+1:

Not even being sarky - it really was a one-off. I wish it were otherwise - I might actually have to buy my own steam loco just so I can smell that unique aroma of steam and smoke and oil and hot metal

We recently stayed at a place in Wales that had it’s own miniature railway, unfortunately not in operation the few days we were there, but it looked ace:

You could definitely do summat like that in the grounds of Sodbury Towers.

Yeh, I fucking wish - I saw this at TGG -

…and the WANT is strong!

The price of such things however, is very, very ouchy indeed, sadly…

I’m gonna have to start volunteering at one of the heritage railways, trouble is the one nearest me (Nene Valley) is a bit shit IMO. GCR is further but more intredasting :ok_hand:

I have a half formed “joke” about amplifier powered steam locomotives in my head but I really can’t be bothered…

We had FoL#1 Ellie with us or I’d have taken you up on your offer of visiting, although not sure if our motorhome would have made it up there!

On the other hand she was mega keen on taking us around the various SSSIs she’d visited during her zoology degree. We went to Llyn Idwal and had to physically stop her from storming on to the beach to tell people to stop swimming in “her” lake.

No, no, no.

What you do is get in touch with your local model engineering society and tell them you have a fucktare of land they can build their train set on and you’ll supply bacon butties and tea and mow the grass somewhat regularly, as long as you get to play with it on their off days.

Aye. One of our access roads is closed for a month, so even more baffled tourists than usual past the gate.

I asked the chaps at the Bala railway about that - a modern recreation of the one we were on would be about £250,000, and that one being an original from about 1906 would be about £500,000
