Thanks for the reminder about The Fishing Race, top show (maybe should have added Great and British and they’d have had a hit on their hands.)
If you have the time this is a beautiful film, featuring one of my heroes Chris Yates, getting on now, but still like an excited kid in the presence of magnificent waters and monster carp
Rod and line isn’t it? Would love to read of your exploits! Given the chance I’ll fish for anything personally, doesn’t mean I’ll be any good at it but will always have a go. I have a box full of lures, which I’m hopeless with, got any tips?
Thinking about buying a new carp pole. I’ve had a Browning Black Magic for about 25 years, and it’s served me well, but fancy something a bit better. Budget up to say £700-£800. Any suggestions?
I don’t know much about poles but I do know that mine is shite, is that the sort of money it costs to get a good one? I have bought a couple of cheap rods in the last five years and they are pretty good for the money. Maybe the cost of a decent pole is lower too these days?
I would stick to fishing for spring/early summer pike. Look for fish in shallow 3-6 foot deep water with vegetation or other cover like downed trees or such. Concentrate on banks that the sun is shining on to warm up the water, wind blowing against the bank (concentrating warm water and baitfish) also is a good thing. You can target these fish with a basic selection of lures; spinners like a Mepps Comet or Aglia or spoons like a Toby or Eppinger Dardevle for searching out fish. Floating/diving minnow baits like a Rapala Original Floater or suspending minnows like a Rapala Husky Jerk can be used for a slow stop-start retrieve if you locate fish or have a follow on one of the search baits. Colours for lures can be as simple as silver, gold, and perch patterns. Chartreuse, hot orange or a combination of the two can be used as a wildcard colour.
Thanks! I’ll take a pic of my lures tomorrow, if I can find them. It’s an occasional thing and considering I’m an occasional angler these days that makes them very rarely used! There are decent pike waters near here and I have caught small fish (We call them jacks here) but usually pike are fished for with live or dead baits and I would have more confidence doing that.
We are definitely more likely to use bait for most fishing and I was wandering after your last post if this is a cultural thing or it’s just the species we have and you have are different, or is it a mixture of both? There must be non predatory fish in North America that wouldn’t look at an artificial lure. Do you just ignore them?
I have, but not for some time. I believe there are some pretty good places but really catching pike with a lure is pretty much a case of looking at what looks to be the darkest most horrible part of a body of water and chucking something in.
I’m going to pop down there at lunch time and try, I know they are in there because I often see the bait fish getting smashed by something.
There are loads in the stretches near here. I’ve only bothered once, mainly because access is tricky- high banks, 8ft wide band of marginal weed both sides. I did catch one though.
