A pen and ink rendering of that image was used by Canadian punk band SNFU on their debut album cover. Never realized it was from an actual photo . . .
Back in April last year we stumbled across an exhibition of Diane Arbus photos (including that one) at the arts centre in Bideford. She did some great work including quite a lot of the residents of various mental health institutions.

But seriously it’s worth looking at the range of her work. A real eye for humanity.
That first image is a cast shot from the 1932 Tod Browning film Freaks. Not a Diane Arbus.
I thought I’d seen it before. At the exhibition we saw there were quite a few she’d taken of the residents of various homes getting ready for halloween or Christmas parties very much with that feel.
The money ran out before they got to the headset though.
