There are better cameras today than in 1942 was my contention. The faff factor of LF / developing is not rudimentary
I’d argue 4x5 Kodachrome has yet to be surpassed unless you are talking absolute top of the line medium format.
Obviously metering and the like are better.
With 4”x5” you run into the limits of diffraction long before lens/film limits.
Even a reasonable 2000dpi would yield a 80 megapixel equivalent image.
Kodachrome was all lab developed so no faff.
Shooting is hard, it’s a slow film, so you need a crap ton of light or very still subjects.
I’d love an 8x10.
I do have a 4x5 but alas it lives in Florida.
One look at the Actual Photography thread shows just how good (ab)normal blokes pointing a camera at things can actually be.
The one thing most of us are guilty of now is not printing our photographs it makes a world of difference.
Wow!
I thought I’d seen every pic ever taken of the Wolf, but that’s a new one for me. Thanks!

The lighting setup must have cost him/her an absolute fortune. Unless of course these are tiny replica mountains.
Maybe the Chinese got a bit further with fusion than we did…
Lop Nor’s a long way from the mountains .
I once had an open invite to visit NINT. I’m not sure I could have blagged a trip to the test site (this was the early 1990s) but all the same I really regret not having taken them up on it .
Ouch. I bet. Hindsight, eh?
I’ve a few like that, including a boss-vetoed 6-monther in Niger in the 90s, all expenses paid, with Paul Sereno. F*ck academic rivalries…
Yea, big regrets, I’m sure. I did however have a week at Pontins with a pre famous Joe Pasquale.
Who was on top?
Now we know why he has a squeaky voice
