Any shoot should be the responsibility of the club so that shoot should be classed as the “site” or club location for safety and controls etc.

Just turning up to “shoot shit in a field” shouldn’t be allowed (don’t know if it is or not at the moment)

PS and before Graeme pipes in, if a farmer is shooting on his own land for the purpose of looking after that land then no it’s not classed as a shoot (farmers and their mates shooting shit on their land is)

I did.

You didn’t define ‘etc’. The guys I met included farmers’ friends. They could be anyone. So when you wrote that you’re OK with ‘etc’ having guns at home I just wondered what that actually meant.

etc = people with a lawful job related purpose i.e farmers, security services, certain police, judges (it’s more prevalent in NI where prison guards etc are permitted to have firearms at home)

My b-i-l is a paid instructor, so that’s clearly a lawful job-related purpose. But if amateurs weren’t allowed to have shotguns he wouldn’t have a job.

I don’t know how often farmers use their guns for work these days. The idea that you could eliminate small pests (rabbits, rats) seems implausible. There is a business of culling deer in these parts, but I suspect that’s rifles rather than shotguns and farmers can hire in specialists (I’ve come across those too) rather than having to do it themselves. Are they still allowed to dispatch injured or sick livestock with a shotgun ? If all of these are non-starters then maybe the only use is for wildfowling to put in the pot and anyone, with the landowner’s permission, might want to do that.

Oh FFS does he do his lessons in people’s gardens or living rooms or at a club?

Culling a deer with a shotgun would be a) nigh on impossible and b) cruel.

Did I say it wasn’t, I would presume that in the majority that would be done by a vet and if it’s an emergency then that would be ‘job related’

It would be excellent if he did…

Out of interest, what are the reasons people have for needing a firearm licence?

Never a living room, I think, although I will ask. He did bring a new gun down to his dining room to show Mrs VB and me and my niece’s boyfriend, but since we didn’t pay him for the instruction I guess that doesn’t count :slightly_smiling_face:.

Usually at a club.

Sometimes on large-ish properties. He’s been hired as part of hen and stag weekends in some pretty expensive places. Always before the drinking starts though (this isn’t France).

That is the difference as said earlier, shotgun certificate you don’t need a reason. Firearms licence you need a reason.
Reasons being hunting, target shooting etc. you just have to justify each and every firearm and the reason for it.

So if you shot deer you could justify a higher calibre rifle, but if you also wanted a .22 target rifle but were not a member of a target shooting club, it would be unlikely you would be allowed to add it to your licence.

Lots of the target clubs work as suggested by people earlier, you store your rifle at the club or just use the clubs guns.

I want to see the safe that holds that bad boy

Is it fire controls out for storage? Or just assumed no one could do anything with it without the ammo

Theres a few in the group, some in private storage. This one is stored at Larkhill RA camp.

The firing mechanism is held in a gun safe.
