These look reasonable to those in the know?
Itâs roasting.
Just get a cheapy. Technical is great if you are going all seasons.
Hope to go soon, but possible it wonât be roasting by the time we do
Technical bags are restrictive.
If you like to move about then consider a zipped thing or a duvet type and a wider pad.
Ok, thanks - decathlon is a good shout - hadnât thought of there
Thoughts on this vs the jaran 2?
This is tapered, but light
They do also have non tapered bags (a friend recommended this site)
Be careful with how many tents âsleep.â In my experience, over the count and condensation becomes a real problem. When it is dry, you can open the ventilation, but wet and windy weather will mean everything is sealed up. This can mean condensation and turn the tent into the palm house at Kew. Not funny. Everything can get proper wet, and if the weather is inclement, tricky to get dry. Iâd get a three man at least so your lad can grow into it. Wonât be long before he wants his own space, which I guess could mean you get another tent, but itâs something to considerâŚ
Agree with the above, plus the sleeping bag and tent you have found are wilding camping stuff.
If you are talking camping in a field with a loo block etc thatâs a very different type of camping.
Wild camping is minimal time im tent and weight and minimalism is key.
Camping on a campsite is being a car and pack the world, have a large tent you can walk/sit up in. Get a gazebo type tent for cooking and playing cards. Bring duvets even if you have the space.
Youâll have more room in the Alpkit, both inside and in the porches.
Definitely foam mat or inflatable, especially for side sleepers. You will be cold even on the warmest night if youâre directly on the ground.
A camping/backpacking quilt or puffy blanket is a better option than full on sleeping bags unless youâre camping in cold conditions
Loads of good used gear on FB marketplace
Same with local ads, folks who went out and bought everything and then realised it wasnât for them
If you can, make friends with someone who runs DofE. They will have stocks of good portable tents and other gear and they should know what they are doing in terms of how to use it.
If youâre still in Edinburgh, a wee jaunt to the Alpkit shop on Causewayside would be a good move. The Jaran is a good tent but I would consider the 3 over the 2 for space reasons. Alpkit do a good inflatable pillow, good sleeping mats, head torches, cookware at sane prices. Also the Brukit is a good thing. The down sleeping bags are excellent but a little spendy, Cloud Peak synthetic bag is not something I would buy, you can spend less money elsewhere for something comparable.
Like those twenty quid vango ones?
Was forgetting there was an alpkit shop, good shout
I guess that kind / size of tent easier to take by car though?
I am under pressure to do this soon, possibly as soon as next weekend
Just need to make this happen, even if I make mistakes, even if I waste money or we end up too sweaty or too cold, I just need to make it happen soon
Walking over to the alpkit shop now planning to pick up the jaran 3, mats, pot or two. The order either the light vango bags or decathlon ones and then good to give it a shot next weekend if the weather is kind
@dom not planning to spend much time in the tent and we would plan to do wilder camping in future- even if my youngest doesnât like it one of the others will, and having this gear would mean I could join friends on wild camping trips
Dad honour at stake - just need to do this even if I waste ÂŁ3/400!
Fair enough, dad points are important
Donât forget the Kendal mint cake
