James Gandolfini (Sopranos) popularised them at one point, very popular on Watchuseek, some seriously nice looking watches.
Ah ok. As I mentioned in another thread Iāve tried the first Sopranos episode a couple of times. I should try again as I want to get into it and see what all the fuss was about.
Iām a real fussy fucker when it comes to GMTās, has to be the travelerās type of complication not office. Sadly this rules out anything cheap as most of those use an ETA movement or off the shelf module which only allows hour jumping of the GMT hand, great if you want to track different time zones from your office but awkward if you need to adjust local time to a new timezone.
Cheapest Iāve found that will do this is the hamilton broadway GMT ltd edition but itās neither fish nor foul design wise and rules itself out on that score alone (i want to be an aqua terra, no a dive watch, no a world time, no ummm).
The Tudor would be great if not for the snowflakes everywhere (at least in pictures, I want to see it hands on, also itās a bit small for my wrists).
I really like Breitlings with their in house B04 (chrono gmt) and B35 (world time) movements, the chronoliner B04 is just gorgeous but unfortunately only available in UAE spec rose gold, limited to 100 edition and therefore even after bretlings precipitous depreciation costs a fucking mint.
The Rolex Explorer 2 used to be a viable alternative to the GMTM but that ship has sailed and prices are being shot into orbit.
After that itās things like the UN dual time and Grand seiko which are on the edge of affordable if you go grey and while I like UNās technological forward thinking their design is very Russian Oligarch unless you you stump the cash for something more tasteful and while I love the craftsmanship and history of Grand Sekio, 3k+ for a Seiko is a mental block iām struggling to get past⦠the new GS branding helps a lot though and an SBGE 201 is something I definitely covet, more than a Breitling Galactic Unitime SleekT though? iām not sure⦠I need more money.
The Omega calibre works on travel mode GMT, the ones I like are dive watch size, thatās about the only down side I can see. Will be trying a Tudor on next weekend along with an Omega, will see how they look and feel.
I note that Tudor are having some supply issues (Internet rumour is that calibres are being used to rectify warranty issues on the first batch of GMTs). As a result some are flipping them at £500 to £1000 above book. Strange, as I found in new one at a dealers with single phone call.
The Rolex Ex 2 was an option, but flipped prices are going up. I can still find one at a Dealers, but even Rolex have put the price up.
Cool watch.
I am loving the recently launched Tudor P01;
Itās derived from a prototype tender submitted to the US Navy in the late sixties which is where the odd looking locked crown system comes from. In the context of some modern watch prices, itās not that expensive either.
Yeah a few years ago the unloved black Exp2 was barely cracking Ā£3000 for a 42mm version, today youāre looking at 6k+ and then some.
I forgot omega also does it correctly (although iām not sure if some of the older seamasters use an eta movement, but the modern ones are fine), I just never warmed to Omegas styling, I should love the PO good planet GMT or the āCookies and creamā as they are travellers gmt, big, clear to read, nice looking but I just donāt - i think itās the bracelet that puts me off.
Exp II 16570ās are the best ones. Dead good they are. 'Specially if yer a lovely slim wristed person.
Whyāve you got one then?
Because of fucking reasons. Fucks sake.
Fuckās
Has the crown suffered a prolapse?
Yes, itās the latest member of the highly sought after ārectal devastationā lineup.
I wonder what watch Paul has bought today?
Fxt
Thatās uglier than a fight at a wedding mate. Jeez.
Like so many things, itās (obviously) subjective and for me, it hinges on the concept that it looks that way for a reason. The design brief from the USN dictated that the bezel had to be resistant to unwanted movement which is why the locks are fitted. Itās a little piece of Cold War esoterica and Iām a sucker for that sort of thing.
Obviously, that also means that Iād happily sell you all into slavery for the chance to own the original prototype on which itās based;
RN Navy watches, CWC.
Unfortunately their founder died this year but the Company continues. They make the RN issue navy divers watch and Specials watch, all to a NATO standard. They normally only sold unissued stock, but they have now entered the consumer market with gusto.
Some of the early watches are collectable, but most of the current issue are reasonable money.
My Mum wears a G10 and has done since 1982. It was issued to my Dad but- already invested in watch faff- he gave it to her as sheād recently broken her watch.
Fuckers ![]()
Bought nowt in a week. I would really like a jade green Bulova Oceanographer, but none about as yet at a price Iām willing to pay for this sadly-unloved backwater of Citizen Group.
I also thoroughly fancy something dressy with a claret dial - love the look of Seiko Presage, but the fact itās a miniscule 34mm and on a horrid bracelet kills that stone dead. The few other red faces out there are hideous and/or far too spendy.
Both of these notions can wait.
