Cocks on clocks (Part the Sekonda)

My doctors visit this morning was enlivened by a brief discussion of watches.
He was wearing a silver Rolex of 1971 vintage (18th Birthday gift).
Small by modern standards but really quite elegant.
I never thought that I would ever say that about a Rolex.

the old one is bloody covetable  the new one - meh - oddly clumsy and overdesigned

Have you found anyone to fix it?

Nope. On the other hand it keeps good time and starts off again if you just give it a couple of winds.

I remember it getting a new crown in I guess the late 80s. The seal around the winding stem had perished and the stem itself corroded clean through (3/4 of the year at sea).

That would be the last time anyone looked at it.

That’s good news, I misunderstood your previous posts, I thought your repair report from the 80s was the current situation.

No, it’s good, it’s just that 40 years between services feels like a bit much.

I was walking past the Panerai boutique today and realised that the watch I was wearing was from 2001 (I think) and has never been serviced.

Yeah, the lugs and crown seems to have been parachuted in from another dimension.

Perfect size tho (for me) 37mm. Insufficient weight for a gold watch (for me).

£19.3k

Oof.

So I have a family do in April. The organisers have decided that a local casino will be the perfect venue with all sorts of gambling related shenanigans.

Personally I hate gambling but it’s the wife’s family and they can be a lot of fun if you’re in the right mood. So to try and shuck my perpetually miserable demeanour I thought I’d waste a few quid on Ali express on a fun and on theme watch so in the words of Chris Boden check out this fucking thing.

It’s gloriously awful. The little button at 8 makes the wheel spin which is seconds of fun, just like real gambling.

Hopefully this will elevate my spirits to enable me to enjoy throwing my money away for no good reason, again just like buying this horror show.

I also decided to have a crack at a smaller watch again which is mildly successful. I’ve always admired the VC original but have zero hope of ever owning one so saw this perverted take on the 1921 and thought why the fuck not.

I quite like it although it feels small I can actually read it and the red dial gives it that certain something that screams me.

The Eterna in the background is what I’ve been wearing today deciding whether to cast it into the void or keep it.

BTW completely off topic if you haven’t seen Chris Bodens content and have any interest in electrical engineering its worth a watch.

I actually looked for this on the vendor’s website this morning and it wasn’t there. It is now.

£5.7k for a slim WG Vacheron tonneau you say?

32mm is the problem.

Still might go and look at it tomorrow.

Unreadable, but lovely.

It’s actually surprisingly legible even without my glasses.

Bloody lovely bit of kit.

Nice, but I much prefer your other VC. :+1:

That doesn’t look close to a 32!

(I’ve seen the actual advert and that’s what it says!).

There’s probably a bit of fisheye from my camera but it doesn’t wear small at all :man_shrugging:

I like it a lot.
But I would have to see one for real to be sure as top down wrist shots can be deceptive, as you say.

Looks even better on the wrist :ok_hand:
