Confounded HDMI splitting issue

I feel like this shouldn’t even be an issue, so apologies in advance for what’s likely a basic question that I’m being too dumb to find the answer to.

All I want to do is connect my laptop (1 x HDMI port, 1 x spare USB A) to two monitors and have the display extend across them both. However in trying to find a suitable HDMI adaptor, it seems I’ve disappeared down a rabbit hole of splitters, switches, adaptors and other assorted devices none of which seem to give me what I want.

It seems like an HDMI splitter is basically what I want but they will only mirror the image on the laptop screen but not enable me to extend it across the monitors.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a device that will do this?

You can’t run multiple displays off a single HDMI port (in extended or daisy chain mode)

Essentially you need something like this but with a different USB type.

Thanks. Weirdly the USB A / 3.0 version of that is twice as expensive at £60.

Perhaps, and in light of what Chris said, I connect one monitor via HDMI and the other via USB. Would that work?

Probably not. You need a thing. Do you only have one video out, be it hdmi or other?

Should do, MrsKettle has done that one work laptops before.

Yup. Just 1 x HDMI and 3 x USB 3.0.

Thanks, will give it a whirl.
