Will you stop it with the fucking turnips!
Im really fucking trying!
I see Niche have launched the Duo. Identical looking machine, but it’s bigger in all dimensions. Holds 83mm flat burrs and comes with two sets one for espresso one for pourover which can be swapped in a minute.
£799
It’s up against tough competition at that price, be interesting to see how it gets reviewed over time.
Feels like the market’s caught up and overtaken. If the promise of the Timemore is realised it will be tough for them. I think the strategy of including two sets of burrs is a misstep. It doesn’t matter how easy it is to swap burrs over, people aren’t going to do it between coffees. The type of enthusiast who wants espresso and filter focused burrs has two machines. This won’t change that.
Their approach to international sales is a turn off too. They charge £799 regardless of where you buy from, so they’re just charging the UK tax portion as extra margin when they sell anywhere outside the UK. That’s a bit cunty.
Now had a chance to use both new drippers. The Origami Air is a resin version of their original porcelain version. It can take both v60 and Kalita style filters, in the case of the Kalita the waves fit one for one with the fins of the dripper making it a perfect fit. You don’t get a base with it as it can be used without one but Origami makes two, a wooden and a plastic one, I went with the plastic has it will hold the fins of the dripper so locking it in place whereas the wooden one is just round allowing the dripper to slip.
I’ve brewed coffee using both a Cafec cone filter and a Kalita 185. Both produce excellent brews with the code filter pushing the fruity light side and the kalita pushing the more full bodied and stronger nutty/chocolate flavours. Both produce a very smooth finish.
The dripper itself is rather nice and just feels quality even though it’s a resin based one. I found it very enjoyable to use and rather annoyingly it’s made me want to try the porcelain version now.
The Torch Mountain dripper is a bit more difficult. There’s not much information on the web and very few youtube videos with people actually talking about it so maybe avoiding any hype around it. The Mountain dripper is porcelain and available in several colours and comes with a wooden base to hold it in place. It has a larger central hole with three small holes surrounding it and a couple of ribs on the side for holding the filter. The website states to use a kalita 155 filter with it, which I bought as part of the order, but the instructions, which are all in Japanese, does show a diagram of how to fold a cone filter at the right angle to use in it. So far I have stuck with the 155. This has produced a really nicely balanced brew starting with a full bodied start and then hitting the acidic fruity notes on the finish, sitting a little in the middle of the Origami using either filter type. I need to play around with this one much more due to the lack of information and the Japanese instructions. The dripper, being porcelain, gets very hot during the brew.
All brews were 20g coffee hand ground using a Timemore C3, 300g water. Various different types of pour.
All bought from the same Japanese website (Kurasu)
Origiami dripper £8 the base was £6
The Mountain dripper was £19
Kalita 155 filter per 100 was £4
Origami cone filters per 100 was £3
Postage from Japan was £24 through DHL and it was 4 days from their first notification to being delivered.
Completely agree, they are now behind the curve instead of ahead, by a fair bit too.
This! It feels like there were going to release a flat 83mm machine and then panicked and added the extra set of burrs.
Unless you can swap the burrs with one click and it’s done in a second and to it’s last setting, what’s the point. You have to use a screwdriver to swap them out on the Duo.
My issue is which second machine do I get and do I get it for pour over or espresso. Although I do enjoy spending 2-3 weeks doing espresso then 2-3 doing pour over.
Blimey, even @wayward can make a cup of coffee in less than a week.
Id still go with Lagom. Just as easy to swap burrs, more burr options available and far superior build.
Rave Signature blend.
First shot, a bit bitter to my tastes, probably need to play with grind a little.
@Penance do you want to send me across a referral code for this place. I’ll try them out.
That’s a bold & probably libellous assertion. Do you have any evidence to support it?
This is an exceptional coffee from Tim Wendelboe.
I’m normally wary of naturals as they can taste overly fermented and musty. This is just bursting with fruit with none of the downsides. Pulling this on a 1:2.5/2.6 ratio.
Oh, sounds interesting. Might need to grab a bag

Made using a metabolite of caffeine. Quite interesting, maybe we’ll see something like this available in the UK.
Some good offers on Sage products at the minute

I have the same products and have been very happy with them. A good starter option IMHO.
