Yes one review put it above the ZP6 and then said it beat the Weber EG1 in some situations. But that’s Lance and he helped design the burrs so rather a lot of bias/interest with that review.
I feel well out of date.
I have no idea what you are all talking about and I am still using a MBK for the occasional pour over! ![]()
We can test them side by side! ![]()
I had forgotten about them, but similarly I had no idea about this new generation of hand grinders till today.
Plus flat burrs have seemingly had a jump in design too mostly aiming at reducing fines
This sounds nerdy and a great idea
Right, I’ve now saved up ~£250 in John Lewis vouchers to finally get a new Bean-to-Cup machine. My DeLonghi EC330S must be around 15-years old by now I think and done stirling work but would like something bean-to-cup.
Bear in mind I usually have an early morning coffee for the day, so simplicity is key, we have a seperate milk frother for Hot Chocolates so its not essential to do milk/auto programmes.
I plan on going to out local JL Outlet Centre over a few weeks and see what they have, what’s the pick of the models say under £750 rrp as most stuff there is already at least 25-30% off if not more.
I’ve had the Sage Bambino and seperate grinder recommended before but Ideally would like an all-in-one machine just to save on plug sockets/counter space.
Edit - ended up with a Siemens EQ900 that was reduced down to £500.
I got a factory refurb DeLonghi Magnifica Evo a few months ago to replace an old DeLonghi model, and it has been great.
A few youtube vids arounds on setting up the grinder and espresso volume, and its a breeze to use and look after ![]()
Well this happend at John Lewis Outlet, nice and easy to use with lots of customisation to play with!
This has been splattering my soshals for a few days, in case anyone’s kitchen needs more mad scientist chic.
The grinder arrived ![]()
I am really concentrating on pour over these days so the Gaggia is currently in a cupboard. This is also the 078 grinder which is burrs specifically for pour over.
Current setup:
Niche next to it for scale.
First day, but this definitely produces less fines as I am able to go significantly finer without it stalling. The grinder itself is a lot quieter than the Niche, although the Niche is a bit heavier/robust feeling although not by much.
Actual usage is very easy and the magnetic cup and cap feel great.
4 cups in and this is exceptional and a big step up from the Niche.
I went from 8 to 11 in whole steps and 9.5 is where it is at for my pour over type and beans. It went from at its finest incredible clarity of the flavour to at its coarsest great mouth feel.
I expected far more playing around to get it right, but no, super easy. I am working nights later so will have a coffee before I head out, will try some fancier beans from September or April on the same setting and see how it goes.
Glad you’ve noticed such an improvement. How.come you chose that instead of the Option O Casa?
Mostly because bigger burs and everyone knows bigger = better. But also down to the 20+ YouTube reviews I watched and group comparisons. The timemore just seemed to suit my workflow and needs and the pour over only burs had brilliant particle analysis compared to some others
Interesting. I hadn’t got round to YT reviews but didn’t see much on various Reddit threads, other than owners of each affirming how great their choice is.
I guess the immediate difference is that the Casa seems to be highly rated for espresso also, but, like you, I also drink purely pour over (though I wouldn’t mind keeping options open for future).
I was tempted by the 078s as it can do both, but all the big reviewers had the same thought that it was an espresso led burr not pour over. As it’s what I use all the time now I just went for it.
Yeah, I saw that about the S also. I’ve just seen that the Timemore is quite a bit more expensive (£680 Vs £520) so that’ll be a pretty easy deciding factor for me. I’m already smarting at the fact the Option O is £390 in the US, but can’t find anyone to bring it back for me / doesn’t look like I’ll be going any time soon.
Have you considered the Pietro hand grinder?
I was closely considering the Pietro or the 078, but convenience and then the Christmas sale made my final choice. But if I got back in to espresso I would definitely get a Pietro.
I’m all about the hand grind and not felt the need to look at other grinders but you’ve just made me check the Pietro out and it looks superb.
I am very tempted by one, will probably sell my niche soon and gaggia, bet I can’t handle that money in my pocket without spending it
