It’s the pinnacle of test cricket and when a side hold The Ashes I’m happy that the other team has to beat them to regain them.
If a heavyweight world champion boxer puts his belt(s) on the line the challenger has to beat him to take them off him, if it’s a draw the current champion retains them. If the Ryder Cup is drawn, the team that holds the cup retains it.
I do think it has encouraged Australia to play negative cricket though, particularly this last game. It remains to be seen If they actually want to win it.
I dunno, they seemed ok in the last test I thought, just completely outclassed. I didn’t think there was any specific gamesmanship or epic slow play, they were just saved by the rain.
I don’t want to change it either, although I’d fucking love it if they put the Ashes on the counter and made it winner takes all!
I really think loosing Lyon has affected Australia to a significant extent. The decision to play two all-rounders and leave Murphy in the pavilion was a really defensive bat-for-time and bowl tight and not chase runs/seek wickets decision. I hope they are more positive next time out,
I do wonder if the powers that be at the MCC/ICB would or should consider the provision of a reserve day in the event of one day being totally washed out: previous test series vs India and Pakistan (home and away) being a case in point, as much as Old Trafford.
Expensive.
You have to pay staff and things for a day you may not need, and try and sell tickets for it.
Ok for tournaments. Less ok for a ground that has to make money somehow.
It’s a nice idea, but a commercial mess.
Another defensive ploy.
He knows England would likely have bowled if they won the toss, so depriving the opposition of their choice rather than going for what is best for you.
Although those two things are not always mutually exclusive
