According to the Guardian, if Cook scores 20 he finishes with 12.345 runs. If he scores 50 his average will be 45.00.
Frankly, I was surprised that his average is below 45 now.
To be fair, itās not a bad average for an opener. Of the more prolific England openers, in the modern era, itās better than Gooch, Atherton, Trescothick or Strauss (all are in the top 17 of the highest scoring openers in test cricket)

I wasnāt criticising 
. IIRC his average was close to 50 for a very long while. If you average 40+ after a decent number of tests you are a very good batsman. To average 45 while opening the batting is very, very good. (Particularly true for Cook who often played in quite weak England teams).
