I’ve stayed in a nice pub on the Coke estate, Holkham Hall.

They didn’t seem short of a bob or two, at least not to the point of needing to sell a cane.

I reckon it’s been half-inched at some point in its existence

The silver assay marks look like London 1935?

Having trouble finding a makers mark that correlates with that date

Is the head mark at te end a single or double head?

I think it’s a single head but it’s seen a fair amount of action and isn’t in great shape.

Makers mark C.G or G.G ?

I hadn’t even noticed that

C.C

This is like some sort of Tomb Raider puzzle.

The 5th Earl, who Chris linked to, was a big gambler and generally disastrous with teh moneyz. He had to move out of Holkham Hall cos he couldn’t afford to run it. After he died in 1944 his brother Lancelot had to auction off a huge amount of stuff to try and rescue the estate from Hugh’s creditors.

Possibly Charles Cook who supplied stick mounts to Thomas Brigg and Sons, makers of luxury umbrellas walking canes and whips

As in Swaine, Adeney and Brigg one has to assume.

That tracks.

This is great. Thank you very much.

Joined forces with the luxury leather goods firm Swaine & Adeney in February 1943 to become Swaine, Adeney, Brigg & Sons.

For what it’s worth I just showed the cane pic to my Brother in law who is from Dominica. his best guess from what he can see is what he calls Angelin or Partridgewood… A little google says this is Andira inermis it’s native to the West and East Indies and specifically recorded from Dominica.

The way some of the fibres in the wood of Guy’s cane run against the general direction of the grain is suggestive of palm wood - which palm I couldn’t say, there are a number of species present there.

e.g. ‘Black Palm’

As in all things design is in the eye of the beholder.
We love the unusual in our home . But it has to have build quality and that can be expensive.
Colour can be so decisive,
When you do go for something designer you have to seriously think of where it is going to be used or displayed .. I go in so many homes and see beautiful items, but you can’t appreciate them because of all the clutter in your eyesight .
..

I went to pick up a pair of speakers a couple of weeks ago as I fancied a winter project doing a restoration.
While I was there the seller took me into the garage as he had a pair of speaker stands for free and I saw this .
Mid century, he can’t give it to charity as it does not have flame proof upholstery .
I rather like it and I’m capable of restoring it but Diane is not keen . I also wouldn’t know where to put it . It would be a shame for it to go in a skip

Make a great listening chair.

I’ve had to stop looking at Etsy as I’ve now bought three chairs from the same people in Croatia, with more set as favourites.

Lighting plays a huge part in any home . How you illuminate a space has a big impact on its ambience.
When I first met Diane 10 years ago I took her to RHS Chatsworth . Where she brought t beautiful outside furniture suite . It was so good it has never been outside and is part of our music listening area ..
On our way out of the show I spotted a floor light on a stand owned by a designer and just loved it . Diane thought I was mad spending that sort of money on a lamp . It’s called the tulip lamp for obvious reasons , all hand made .
3 years ago we went to RHS Wentworth and saw the designer of my original light .
Fell in love with a new design he had created. After discussions I got it at a great price as he didn’t want the hassle of getting it home .

I have several pieces by the same designer.
They are all made from steamed sustainable timer .
The larger of the 2 lamps can also go outside
