SWMBO bought one too, I get to dick around with it and she pays for the parts… result ![]()
On with replacement steering pump, steering box, fuel filter housing, rear right stub shaft, bearings and races, galvo mudsheild etc should be ready for MOT next week. That’ll make it a 90k TD5 on the road for less than £11.5k, happy with that.
Anything after that is princess pavement jobs.
First of the refurbed SVX alloys is ready, 265 Falken Wikdpeaks fitted. Powder coat and Laquer, satin black.
Also lopped off the offside outrigger and prepped for the weld.
Decided to remove the RTC spring as this isn’t a tricked up offroader, no benefit to be had and the downside of excessive strain on steering pump, box etc… goes some way to explaining why the existing pump and box has to be replaced!
What’s on the roof?
Too much
Nice looking little thing.
It’s a pop up tent. The lad will probably use it. I’d remove it, but not my decision ![]()
After the MOT, need to refurb some original seats and get shot of those gopping RX7 bucket seats. Once that’s done, Miriam will be able to drive it. Have booked up a weekend of instruction and driving on one local estates. Figured a professional instructor would be advisable, buggered if i want to be in that firing line ![]()
Looks battle ready!
What are your plans for this one, Bob?
This one is Miriams. I just get to do the work, she issues for the parts. Other than something we are both interested in, hoping to get the lad interested, slim chance it might just get him out and about enjoying himself without drink being involved. I remain hopeful, but i know it’s an uphill struggle. His latest GF seems to be a good influence, she also likes Landys, it’s a thread worth pulling.
Best wishes, Bob
After doing this a couple of years ago
And then sticking it back together and replacing a bunch of stuff to get this:
It was finally time to replace the bumper! One came up on eBay in passable condition for sensible money
It was a treat to the car for getting through its mot clean as a whistle with the garage being very complimentary about how well the car had been looked after.
So just finished the bumper, coolant flush, oil, brake fluid and pads / discs.
I’ll do the gearbox and differential fluids next week!
Considering one of these as a first car for my son, insurance is reasonable, they seem reliable, just a bit rust prone.
He’d certainly have a lot of fun in it and be the envy of his mates. I had one, following a Mk1 MR2. The MR2 was an absolute hoot (and looked nicer, imo) but the MX-5 was probably the more capable (or I was, later
).
Make sure its a facelifted mk3 if you go down that route… So that’s late 2009 through to 2012, or 2012+ for the facelift of the facelift.
They’re known as NC2 and NC3 for short (with NC1 being the 2006-2009 model). Or some folks call then MK3.5 and MK3.75
The reason I say this, is that they massively revised the engine for the NC2 and switched to forged internals for crank / rods / pistons etc. It makes these things fundamentally bullet proof.
Mine has seen 4 years of track abuse and the engine is a complete gem!
We have a Mk3 MR2 which FOL#2 and FOL#3 share, its great fun
