Does the layout of the drivers have a mathematical basis, or is it purely, uh, aesthetic?

That’s one of the reasons that I kept the original panel layout - This layout might reduce cancellation effects . Another factor is that some panels had a hole in the middle to allow a fitment of a smoke detector in the original ceiling panels. I also wanted to be able to reuse the acoustical stuffing panels to give me options for controlling the rear ward sound. I have got used to this layout maybe more relaxing to look at than totally regular?

I read that as smoke machine, and would be disappointed if you didn’t add one for settle next time.

A (slightly mental) friend recently bought one of these for his living room.

Apparently the laser set up is also on its way.

I’ve got a stl file for some Altec 808 horns but no printer. Really tempted by this to try and experiment with modelling and printing horns.

What do people use on here?

For enhanced air guitaring?

Mines a small one - Prusa mini+ 175 x 175 x 175mm Great quality - My son has a Bambu labs A1 he makes nice finished stuff that’s bigger 254 x 254 254mm .

It took me a while to sort it but now I’m finding it great fun and really useful.

I use a free online modeller called Onshape - I understand Fusion 360 is also free now for domestic non profit stuff. My efforts with exponential splines for horn flares have failed so far but Im hoping to sort it I have done all my learning via free youtubes vids

Thanks, yeah if I was confident in getting the results I wanted I think I’d already have one ordered. Maybe more practice 3d modelling is needed first.

I’m giving away my ender V3 and getting the Bambu P1S with the AMS. I’m waiting for black Friday to place the order. Note that they are giving a good price on filament that you order at the same time.

If you’re an enthusiast, an ender or Prusa is a great choice. The Bambu is more the Apple “it just works” approach. You do you.

Size is a thing, look at the print size maximum. If you’re doing horns there’s actually a good argument for going even larger than the P1S, but the H range is not in the black Friday sales!

I realise that a lot of people want to reproduce a certain vintage, but ultimately science has moved on. The multi cell horns were generally made for theatres, and aren’t necessarily the best for home audio.

Now you can reproduce the work of more modern geniuses like Le Cléac’h and create something that is totally suited to your needs. And they look even cooler.

Yeah from what I’ve heard the Bambu printers just work, and would be one less thing to worry about as a complete novice thinking is it the machine or me producing poor results

Also these look a good deal? Never heard of them though.

The Bambu thing is a complete ecosystem - your can buy their filament and it has RFID tags to make things even easier. The app links to your phone. This is cool and fun, but there is a cost. There will no doubt be cheaper things out there.

For me, I want multi colour printing, and the Bambu seems great for that.

But either way, it’s worth doing some 3d modelling and seeing if you enjoy it. I don’t think there’s much depth to the hobby if you just download a few STLs and press a button to print.

Yeah more 3d modelling first. I’ve done some stuff on rhino but mainly speaker cabinets, squares with circles, no real curves etc. Did draw one horn that seemed to come out ok.

It’s mainly to prototype and check things are ok before going into the workshop to cnc stuff out as it’s almost a 3 hour round trip so want to foresee any issues before getting there.

I recommend Fusion, which is free for non commercial use. It deals with curves really well.

I’ll take a look. Thanks

I am downloading the app now took quite a while to find the free for personal download.

Ok boomer! :face_blowing_a_kiss:

It’s only on my laptop - because I have malware issue on main PC. Would it be possible to export a STEP (not STL) file of your horn model? and email it? I want to see how easy it is to update in Onshape . I am thinking of a Joseph Crowe purchase but need to see how onshape manages with step file modifications?

cheers

Andy

Glad it’s not just me having trouble finding. Still haven’t found it.

Sure. Do you want me to create a specific horn profile for you? I need throat size, shape (e-jmlc or IWATA) and frequency (expansion rate is optional). I can then create a surface and mail that to you.
