I can shed some light on that. One thing that’s really notable in the USA vs here, is the prevalence of homeschooling, in particular amongst the Christian Right, where parents are often determined that their children should have zero awareness of anything LGBTQ+, or anything about sex ed other than marriage only / abstinence only, and, of course, that other bogeyman, evolution. There are multiple, quite massive organisations that produce all manner of textbooks and things to facilitate all of this fuckery.
Similarly, even within schools, what actually gets onto the curriculum is often decided by locally elected school boards, and not by people with any academic background to speak of. So education can vary wildly by state/district.
Perhaps extremism fits better? - I like strawberries but if I ate 49 punnets a day for a year I may well end up deranged and or dead. Too much of anything is no good, this I believe includes what we feed our minds - If I’m fed bull shit from childhood my head will be filled with …
I’m not sure I’d call it placid. There are plenty of fired-up angry people in the MAGA crowd. They’re prepared to tolerate Trump’s epic thieving for at least three reasons. The context, which was something I really wasn’t aware of before I went to live there, is the huge inequality in US society, a feature of which is the huge number of really, really poor people - people who can’t afford shoes for their kids, who can’t be sure they’ll be in work next week and who, if they get seriously ill, won’t be able to afford the healthcare they need. Honestly bits of it can look like the third world.
So, firstly, if those are your circumstances you’ll listen to anyone who tells you they can make your life better. You’ve tried reasonably honest politicians and here you are - still in the shit. Maybe Tommy Shelby’s your man ? Even if he does seem to be stupider than you.
Secondly, you have some empathy with Trump. You have to live by your wits. If you can make money out of people richer than you and if you can avoid paying your taxes then perhaps you will. He’s just doing what you would do (you don’t understand finance too well, so you don’t realise that he’s stealing from you too).
Thirdly he’s got a long list of other people who are “really to blame” for all the bad things. On the list are the MainStream Media who he says are lying to you about what a bad guy he is. You’ve got literally no way of knowing whether they’re lying or he is.
He might be in trouble though. You do know the price of gasoline and that he seems to be stuck in a war that he started and that you really want him to walk away from. Right this very minute. Yessir.
I agree with the results of inequality but the level of ignorance feels quite purposeful. I mean with zero formal education, no prior access to the internet, in fact you could be mute when you look at this man
It remind me of that old joke about “90% of lawyers give the rest a bad name”. I know a few people who have done some incredible work with home schooling their own kids, usually as a way of navigating SEN when school support has been lacking, but they seem to be massively in the minority there.
It is, but not entirely by the ignorant - the erosion of educational standards is real and cynical, it’s not just so-called ‘home education’ that’s an issue, standards of state education are low too, and it serves the vested interests (church, state, corporate, marketing) very well indeed.
