I’ve been east to west, and north to south in the states and this was also my conclusion.
If you had a good job/ were successful then you could live like a king, but if you lost it, or if you were poor - then you were fucked.
The large communities who relied on charitable visits from touring doctors and dentists was the first eye opener, and then you see the people in towns and cities just abandoned like they’re nothing, just worthless.
When I got back the first time people asked me what it was like and my response was something like - ‘nothing prepares you for just how big skid row really is’.
And people like Trump, so far removed from all this point their fingers and describe other nations as ‘shit hole countries’…

There was a community on the western edge of Houston which we drove through once by accident. It was essentially a shanty-town. A favela.
Would that mean that the US Constitution would prevent the Federal armed forces from operating there ?
EDIT: Google AI reckons that they could still carry on shooting at stuff as long as the territory remains ‘unincorporated’. Otherwise they’d have to establish the Strait of HormUS National Guard and use that (just a moment’s work with a Sharpie pen, I imagine …).
Poverty in the U.S is nothing new. Steinbeck dived into it in Tortilla Flat.
He was flayed for it at the time and it was much misunderstood, even to this day.

People forget (or never knew or conveniently “forget”) that there were homeless encampments after the Civil War and in the 1920s and 30s that dwarfed anything the right wing is scaremongering about now.
In the 20s over 15,000 people lived rough in New York’s Bowery district alone

There were up to 500,000 dust bowl migrants in the 1930s from the worst hit areas and 2.5 million from the wider plains area.
They didn’t get a very good welcome!

California still has areas that were “colonized” by hillbillies and remain very conservative (Orange County for example). California puked up both Nixon and Reagan

A reporter for the network said the US president made the comment during a phone call on Monday, during which he also said the US had a direct backchannel with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC later denied it was involved in talks with the US.
