Vance appears to walk back Trump claims that US citizens will receive $5,000 if Republicans win midterms
Vice-president JD Vance appeared to partially row back on Donald Trump’s outlandish claims that every adult citizen in the US would receive $5,000 if the Republicans retain the House and Senate in the midterm elections.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” Trump told a roaring crowd, during a nearly two-hour long speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas in which he also urged voters to “pretend that I’m on the ballot”.
But Vance, speaking after the president, suggested the so-called dividend payments would not go to the wealthy and that it could be paid for by US tariff revenues – though the suggested payment dwarfs what the US has taken in through the protectionist measures.
Congress would need to approve or otherwise acquiesce to the payment. The sum would far exceed US tariff revenues even before the Supreme Court tossed much of the president’s tariff program last year.
The White House has yet to release details on Trump’s announcement.
Let’s see: Adult population of US is approx 270 million. Multiply that by 5000 and you get Holy Fuck…

In early 2025, Trump and billionaire Elon Musk floated sending 20% of the cost-cutting savings from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) back to American taxpayers in the form of a $5,000 “DOGE dividend,” but no central pool of cash was ever created from which to distribute.
Late last year, Trump claimed federal revenues collected from new tariffs would fund $2,000 rebate checks for middle- and lower-income families, but fiscal models later showed the rebate would cost almost twice as much as the $240 billion generated by tariff collections and the administration didn’t actually have the money or authority to send out the checks.
And after allowing Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies to expire—which hiked premiums for millions of people—the Trump administration backed a plan to issue direct rebates of $1,000 to $1,500 annually to citizens’ Health Savings Accounts, but the rebate idea went up in smoke after Congress failed to pass legislation re-appropriating the “savings".
