I’m off for a night out/off in the Barbican/Shoreditch area (London Concours/Smith & Sniff Gig @ Honourable Artillery Company) and any suggestions of good places for food/beers/cocktails in that area?
On the basis of recommending what you’d do yourself, a friend is coming to stay in a couple of weeks and I’ll be taking him and his mate here for lunch
and to the Martini bar on the first floor of the Barbican the next evening. It’s genuinely good IMO. Opens at 5pm. Can get pretty busy (because it’s genuinely good).
The Jugged Hare on Silk Street is good for beer and food (so long as you like game).
St John (!) is just up Cowcross Street from Farringdon station.
I seem to get a lot of "one for the road"s from the Fox and Anchor nearby.
Brutto is (or maybe now was?) fashionable as fcuk
but I’ve never been there myself.
The Holy Tavern was the Jerusalem Tavern and is great for real ale.
Shoreditch is a place where it’s difficult to avoid cocktails but it’s not my area of expertise.
Thanks for the ideas, should have said it’s a Tuesday night too.
Lots to get on with!
The Aviary… Nice rooftop bar right by the Artillery Co. grounds. Could be busy in the evening though.
Btw am also going to the Concours, though not sure which day yet.
Brutto is fantastic. Such a lovely laid back atmosphere, and the food is excellent. £5 negronis too…
Many thanks everyone, lots of excellent looking choices there! ![]()
This used to be by go to in Shoreditch area as just a more traditional pub rather than anything fancy. Used to do litovel, a Czech pilsner on tap which was quite nice.
No idea, what it’s like now, but that used to be a proper boozer. ![]()
Yeah it was, and hopefully still is a great place. Caveat that it’s probably been 6/7 years since I’ve been in there. But a good handful in there and then up the road into plastic people. Really didn’t quite know how special it was at the time.
It’s 25 years since I went in there. Those were the days when I didn’t go home!
Looks like they still do!
All added to my Google maps for shortlisting! ![]()
…and of course, if you fancy a meatfest, there’s always that good old AA haunt, the Red Dog in Hoxton Sq….
