I had the M3 on my Empress Silver monoblocks and found that the Hattor Passive pre was better in my system when I did the compare, the Hattor is made by Kozmo but costs a bit more. I brought the Tekman Rey version

I have one of those a friend asked me to test out , seems to have a very crackly volume control so not tried it much as its very irritating

Often compared mfa passives and active pre amps and the mfa are just superb i find .

Not my experience
Jonathon Billington himself bought a couple of MFA pre amps round to a friends

I was prepared to believe that I had not heard a really good passive before and was really looking forward to hearing them. We spent an afternoon with them and were rather disappointed, they were not bad pre amps but when we put in an active (not Kondo) after a few hours with the passives the difference was obvious.

It is counter intuitive as you would think that the fewer components in the signal path the better but that was not what we heard.

On another occasion at bake off at my place someone bought along a MFA Baby Classic with the same result

As I said before YMMV etc etc. They may well work in some systems and they obviously have a following but I wouldn’t buy one.

It’s not easy to make a passive pre with both an easy-to-drive and relatively stable input impedance and a desirably low output impedance. TVC’s allow more room for manoeuvre than pots-in-a-box, but then you need to be a master of the black arts of transformer design, especially if you want to poke enough wires into the winding stack to give you decent control resolution.

It seems strange that people think active devices are anathema if you put them in a box and write ‘pre-amp’ on the outside of it, but they are perfectly acceptable if you put them in another box and write ‘power amp’ on the outside of it, which you’re sure as hell going to do. But hey, sometimes what’s written on the box is more important than what’s inside it

No, its dead or alive, not there or not :+1:

*My only understanding off The big bang theory .

I’d joke it was the parrot, but that was always dead .

You can’t know exactly where it is, otherwise its momentum would have to be completely uncertain. Talking of jokes
