Just love the style.

Check the driver surrounds. The foam ones on the small units were very prone to crumbling. The rubber ones on the woofers tended to perish.

Good info. I’m currently saving for something else and it’s really just that I love the style and they ‘seem’ cheap.

When you say small units, did they have then firing up or back? Just that I noticed the grill cloth there too.

The original design had three drivers - a 15" woofer, facing forwards, and an 8" mid-range and a 3" tweeter, both facing upwards. I have a pair. They were ‘work in progress’ when I started mending other people’s kit and so, like almost everything else of mine, have not had a moment spent on them in years. One day …

There are some more details here http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Wharfedale_cat_files/Wharf_kits.pdf.

The upwards facing thing was because they come from a time when there was a lot of mono about, so they’re (sort of) omnis. Wharfedale later sold them as suitable for stereo too. Whether they really are is open to discussion.

Saw it on Fink Pish. Something about the way he explained the solid-state rectifiers didn’t sit right with me. Perhaps just my growing valve-paranoia…

Irrelevant to me FWLIW, 'cos I’ve just bought this to try-out -

Assuming it a) actually exists, b) the seller doesn’t play silly-buggers, c) couriers don’t steal or destroy it.

Lovely amp. Very nearly settled on one of this before I bought @Jim’s old Alephs from @thebiglebowski .

I’m not wild about the notion of unobtainium transistors, but hopefully they’ll outlast my attention-span, which shouldn’t be too much of a challenge.

Does mean I’ll need a(nother) new pre.

Probably.

They’re not rare like the SITs, NP has a shit load of them.

Was tempted by that but I’ve just bought an F4.

I’m surprised that he has a Galapagos Islands tortoise in the garden. Must get through a shitload of lettuce.

That’s Fred, he’s pen pals with our Erik, he’s over in the UK to meet up for the first time, pop out for a pint and a bag of crisps.
