Finally dead

Fuckity fuck my IPLs have finally gone kaput

They now distort and fart like buggery so I’m currently running a pair of ancient B&W DM22’s that I had in the garage. Or maybe some Mission 700le’s.
The trouble is that while both are fast and remind me that stereo can actually place sounds in a sound stage, they are a bit light in the bottom end and by light I mean non existent.

Obvious answer is ‘repair / replace’ the IPLs woofer but replacement is complex as no bugger has them in stock and if they did it’d be from France or Italy so large courier and import charges. I reckon about £400 all in plus fitting and fettling and the other drivers are hanging on by a thread now too after 20 years.
Repair would require time and travel and DIY is £50 for the kit from France plus more for glue and then more when I inevitably fuck it all into a cocked hat and have to buy another kit.

So I have a couple of realistic choices

  1. Scour eBay for some new speakers
  2. Scour eBay for a Sub to go with the speakers I have.

Anyone got any suggestions for speakers in the £1k range 2nd hand that would give me some imaging along with some gut clearing bass? Bonus points for eBay / other links.

Kit on the front is Cambridge audio CXN → Audio Synthesis Dax Decade → Tag McLaren AV32R → Audio Synthesis Desire Decade.

Tag does 2.1 crossover stuff so leaning in the direction of sub(s) but no idea what’s good these days.

The unrealistic choice of seeing if Sodders wants to swap a watch for his fridges is not on the cards as my hifi is on the 2nd floor and all my mates are old. Much as those Heckos give me the raging bonor.

Think you still have to go transmission line for that sort of bass for that sort of money.

Refoaming is not too difficult there are lots of videos on you tube to help.
I’ve done a few for myself. It’s not too complex and i only fucked up on one of the ones I did. But removed foams and fixed it on 2nd attempt.

I always thought people used bog standard pva glue for surrounds

I’ve used pva and a black rubber solution based glue the black one was the easiest and produced the best result. It was supplied with the surrounds

If you can get the correct surrounds then you could always get Wembley Loudspeakers to do the job for you, they may even be able to get the surrounds for you.

Were you happy with the IPLs when they were not buggered ?

If so …get the drivers fixed…it’s cheaper and less faff than buying a £1k pair of speakers … getting them home to find not as good as what you had before.

This

this is the sensible way forward :ok_hand:

If you dont fancy tackling it yourself, another shout for Wembley Speakers.
They can fix anything speakery.

What’s happened to this place?
I was expecting unhinged lunacy not measured sensible trousers.

Bah.

I suppose this Wembley place might be worth a try.

When I mentioned them earlier I googled them to give a link in my reply and found their website not there so called them to see if still trading as I also need some work doing. They are still working but seems telephone contact only unless I am being dim (very possible).

That’s the meaty goodness that I expected right there. Gold star for you.

I have a pair of IPL S5 if you are interested. Won’t be expensive.

That’s the big punchy buggers …isn’t it …

10" bass drivers

Which bass drivers do they use? Mine are the 5s too so there may be a solution here. How far from Bedford / MK are you?

They are the black carbon fibre ones that were used fir a while. Dome mids and tweeters.
I’m in Sheffield
