This was my first. Paperboy money, 1965??
Yes were in the forefront of colour photography as well as stereo then.
Well that wasn’t mine, but just what it looked like.
I did have an uncle’s old mini system to start with, no idea even what brand it was.
First proper system I purchased myself was:
Technics SLPG390
Mad C320BEE
Quad 11Ls
Was a considerable step up, I remember that much.
In 1970? I brought this home from Vietnam.
I don’t know if these were the exact model numbers, but they look right.
Around 1987 I finally had the readies to go for a decent set up so
Systemdek IIX with Linn Akito arm and Audio Technica MC cart
Audiolab 8000A amp
Denon CD & Tape deck
Infinity RS 5001 speakers
Had it for years until divorce penury forced me into selling most of it - sigh.
Your first proper hifi is the one you have now
The design of those speakers gives the impression of being inspired by the mother of all trips.
Mid 70s Fi;
After several years of having to listen to the Old’s Radiogram through Sansui open-back 'phones, I finally bought some 2nd hand classics;
Yamaha belt-drive summat-or-other. It semi auto and came set up,
Sony 6045 Receiver,
Sansui portable cassette recorder,
and some home made speakers that were replaced by a pair of Klipsch La Scalas that were owned by a mate who couldn’t store them at home (in hindsight, I think they were stolen).
They also doubled as side-fill on stage
Apart from the La Scalas, everything else was sold to upgrade my drumming requirements. Replaced by a Akai ‘modular’ system. A bit like this…
But with more blue lights.
Back in 2005. Some kind of budget Marantz CD Player, an Acoustic Solutions Integrated Amplifier and a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 loudspeakers.
This was then joined by a Pro-ject TT of some sort.
Then I joined a Hi Fi Forum and attended my first Bake Off in Edenbridge… The rest is history!
They were, and still are, very good.
That combination of CD and speakers was slightly mullety, no?
Probably. I had the CD player first to run into the mini system, as that was just vinyl, tape and radio. Then the amp and speakers got added. I think when I did upgrade it was to an Audio Analogue Paganini, which then went to the opposite end of the spectrum
The system that got me into HiFi was my mate Danny’s
He had
Lp12 with Ittok I can’t remember cart
Myst amplifier
Alison 6 speakers
The whole thing had me captured within two tracks.
After that I was down the rabbit hole properly
First bits I bought were a Technics SCHD70 system with a pair of Tannoy DC1000s which I had for quite a while until I went to University in 2005…

Bought a bargain Cambridge AV amp and Denon DVD player from Cash Converters, and then a NAD L53 all in one

Discovered hifi forums within a year in 2006 I had a Rega Planet Mk1, Primare A20 & Kef XQ1 speakers And that’s when the fun began!

Beogram 1000
Beomaster 901
Pioneer CS454 speakers
The Beogram was swapped for a Thorens 160, the Beomaster for a Nad 3020 & then onto a slippery slope of bad looking ‘audiophile’ products until I heard a valve amp properly*
- Funnily enough, we’d grown up playing singles & LPs on one of these (EKCO Radiogram) which had both a Garrard turntable and an EL84 based receiver in it.
Ariston cd player
Cyrus 2 integrated amp
Heybrook HB1s with 79 strand
I loved the Heybrooks, and when I changed them I gave them to a friend. He asked if I wanted them back a decade or so ago, but the foam around the bass driver had perished. So they ended up in a skip. I had no idea you could get them re-foamed unfortunately. They would have been perfect in the study.
Until recently Scanspeak were still making that driver on the Vifa tooling in Vifa’s old factory. I think I bought the last 150 or so as there’s been a requirement from Heybrook, JPW and Snell owners.
