FR-64 vs FR-64s vs FR-64fx

The mass of the arm is not the point. It’s the ‘effective’ mass that determines suitability with a particular cartridge.

Fuck it I’m buying a CD player this is getting too confusing now.

Right then transport vs player what’s better?

Did you use the Ikeda with the io Guy? I am assuming you did.

As far as I understand it (someone correct me if they disagree) the ‘effective’ mass is the moment of inertia about the pivot divided by the effective length of the tonearm squared. After that it becomes complicated as it is dependent on the distance of mass distribution from the pivot. That then becomes a whole can of worms, which is why we (or at least I) have to rely on the data from the manufacturer.

So much potential for a Numberwang! in this thread.

Stupid boy, Pike

Yes, but I also used Matt’s Shindo SPU-A (which sounded great despite not aligning very well by conventional means) and an FR-1 Mk3 which had to be askew in the headshell to align as I wanted it to,

The arm needs more of a bend in it imho.

Did anyone here buy the Ikeda on ebay?

Not me, but I’m not surprised it went quickly at that price.

Did me a favour as I couldn’t afford it anyway (plus the groovemaster looks interesting)

I presumed it was you when I saw it was sold. There is an Alphason HR100s on eBay, nice with an IO

£700, I think not. Lots better for that sort of money.

Like?

Zeta, my SME IV was that sort of money, AudioMods, Grace 940, I got one of my Wheaton Tri-Planar’s for that sort of money.

Also that air bearing arm that is made in this country which I have forgotton the name of.

I wouldn’t agree that any of those was significantly better than the Alphason. Different maybe but not better overall.

Bob, you know as well as me that the chances of finding an SMEIV or a Tri Planer for £700 are lottery win odds.
A own an Audiomods and a Grace 940 and while they are both nice arms they are not, IMO, better than a HR100S.

I have had two of them and sold them on. I found them too soft and undynamic, especially in the bass end. Nice top end mind.

Well my last Tri-planar was less than £700. The SME was £650.

Next time you see either at those prices please give me a shout :+1:
