Free TEAC TN 102 Magnefloat

If you google TN102 there’s very little about them - I’ve only seen one in Japan and a tatty looking one with the pulley cover missing in Russia!. It was essentially an attempt to rival western quality of turntables. Items like the belt pully cover and motor board are all castings. The motor is a hysterisis design, these can synchronise any load regardless of inertia and develop a constant torque regardless of speed. This used to spins up very quickly and run beautifully.

This is how it came to me, the push on/off switch missing, but all original otherwise.

There is a stepdown transformer.

The motor is suspended below the plinth in its own damped chassis. The bearing is assisted with paired ring magnets set facing each other over the spindle housing and beneath the platter. This was the magnefloat design. TEAC bought the firm, but were later sued for patent infringement and much of the remaining stock was mothballed.

The new plinth is made from a birch ply top plate with saw cut Braz Mahog thick veneer, the sides from solid Braz Mahog and the beading and fillets from English Walnut. The inside is filled with PU resin and powder filler. The arm bezel is in oak and the armboard in spalted Beech.

Now for the bad bit… it doesn’t work! You will need to know your way around hystetesis motors and circuits or know assume one who does. It used to work, but now it is resting. You could drop a DC motor in if you wanted.

The good news is its free…ish, well chuck a few quid into forum funding free.

Can deliver to Lopwell or Settle, that’s it.
