and indeed I was. Most of the song sessions moderately attended, though the room was packed full on Saturday evening. Tunes sessions mostly busy and loud.
The surprise concert brought Martin Simpson out for a few numbers (including a largely unrehearsed unaccompanied rendition of To Bellman), Sean Cooney (with a guest appearance from Nessie), Rowan Piggot and Will Sartin, the Hearnes, and others).
Excellent.
They did all of Tigermilk in order then the heavy hitters from the other albums.
Tomorrow night thry are doing If Your Feeling Sinister.
Wouldn"t suprise me if a lot of the audience will be at both gigs.
Glad you enjoyed it. Only seen them live once and it was years ago. Don’t remember too much about it tbh though I did enjoy it.
My mate had the first press of Tigermilk, didn’t own a CD player. Used to listen to it a fair bit in my youth. Seemed crazy to me a new LP could go for serious money, £500 at the time which was a fortune to us, when CDs sounded so much better ;-p Did not compute. He was definitely keeping it as an investment then unfortunately got too far into drugs and it was sold.
Yip, recorded at Stow College I believe. I studied there after I dropped from Uni and started on an apprenticeship. That would have been 1998-2000. The music tech department was rammed and the haze of weed smoke in the car park was thick. Everyone wanted to emulate Belle and Sebastian or Slam or Oasis so there was a bit of a musical mix going on there at the time.
I was very impressed with Belle & Sebastian’s drummer last night. He isn’t at all flash, but swings like a bastard. Such a light touch and completely gets out of the way of the song, whilst simultaneously bolting down the entire band. Some of the songs are very fast with a real motorik groove and he was able to play that cleanly, providing a light, but driving throb. A Really good player.
Tonight is The Orb plus a cast of thousands at the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham. It’s basically Alex and his mates, so System 7, Sedibus, Youth etc.
This is overspill from an identical, but scheduled later, event tomorrow. However today is forecast for 20C and tomorrow is 13C and I assume a lot of it will be in the outdoor back yard so I may have accidentally spawned the best day.
