HiFi legends

Go visit Gregg (@catcando) and be amazed.

My old Tannoy GRF/Golds did 20Hz in room at 100dB/1W.

Just remembered why I stopped doing hifi forums years ago.

I think all things are design compromises

There are many paths to success, and high sensitivity and Low power is one such way. But in my experience, high sensitivity can carry its own compromises. Driver linearity, bass extension etc

It’s very hard to have super high sensitivity and a flat frequency response. The very act of ironing out speaker flaws lowers sensitivity.

Most of the more linear sounding speakers I’ve heard, aren’t hugely sensitive, conversely many as sensitive speakers weren’t especially balanced.

Fuck me you’re on a roll today.

Please carry on ignoring my post

You did ask

105dB at 1W/1M

What do Jim’s go down to now?

Oh, and MF may try to do the bottom 20Hz well but the other 19,960 are gash.

No way the 20hz was at the same be level as 1khz…. How down exactly was the bass on the average level?

Disagree. There’s more than one way to skin a cat. High sensitivity speakers are like lotus 7 / caterhams. They can be phenomenal, but they’re not good at everything.

There is no one perfect answer here, or every manufacturer would make nothing but high sensitivity boxes.

Is that an active bass module? And again, can we see 20hz level vs 1khz level.

Simply hitting 20hz at -10db doesn’t really mean much

Did you ever try the System Slide Rule or use a 550W Supercharger?

Ok, flip it around then - show me the speaker that can produce 20hz at the same level as 1khz.

This from the 5way 12 sided horn days.
Was using one 25W KT88 push pull tube amp at the time..

Soon after I took it to 5 amps, still passive XO and at Scalford was using a 60W T-amp on tapped horn subs.
I improved things with bigger bass amps.
But they don’t need big watts, they NEED big / huge damping factor.

My SH50 / 60 efforts would do the same plot today.

The reason there are few flat to 20Hz speakers is because of room modes and they can sell plenty of over priced cat / monkey coffins to people who could never tame a room mode or want large’ish speakers🙂

It certainly triggered a load of assumptions.

Who knew that we were all waiting for a good ole stramash?

Yes but again it comes to my point of compromise. The speakers that do this will
Be utterly enormous! Most mortals can’t or don’t want speakers the size of wardrobes in their rooms.

The route to high efficiency rarely blends well with domestic harmony

High efficiency cables would be needed to get full benefit.
