High Fidelity, the Decline of the Decades

Snells were never particularly sensitive and I’m doubtful of AN’s claim about the J’s or E’s being 94dB+

Type A’s (& particularly A/iii) were an extremely sophisticated 3 way design and would be almost impossible to replicate without knowledge of the particular driver matching and crossover adjustment procedures Snell used. That said I don’t think AN are particularly trying to recreate what the original K’s & J/ii did so why they couldn’t make some kind of larger 3 way system (even if not a type A) remains unclear.

I remember it very well. One of the largest rooms at Scalford and the As sounded fantastic. Unfortunately, Dom never quite managed to replicate that at home.

In quite a lot of cases (at least in PA), you need to run a setup fairly hard to actually get the best sound out of it, especially when it’s a conventional driver based setup. I suspect because of the enormous room he had at Scalford, Dom was able to turn the wick up to levels that would be unbearably loud for anyone but Tuffbob in his living room.
