If my mate will have me over, I’m half minded to try Munich by train at some point this year.

London → Brussels → Frankfurt → Munich (everybody talk about, pop muzik)

Munich → Cologne → Brussels → London

Overnighting in Frankfurt and Cologne because it’s a long old way, and stopping for a beer and to see a few sights is appealing. Actually, the prospect of a couple of nice cold Kölsch is starting to sound pretty nice.

If you haven’t been to Heidelberg I highly recommend it, one of my favourite places.

actually Wiesbaden is also bloody nice (old money place so lots of rich old ladies with tiny fluffy dogs though)

Enough time to spend a few hours in the Sachsenhausen hopefully :+1:

I think this is the last year the High End HiFi show will be held at MOC before moving to Vienna in 2026

Indeed, however Munich in May is on the list of things that I’ve done for quite a few years but probably won’t do this year. May is a bit of a write-off, and High End clashes with Desertfest London :metal:

I went over in August a few years ago when my friend was at a very low ebb and that was nice. Might try to wangle that again.

Narelle insisted that we go on a Norwegian Fjord Cruise this year.

I didn’t fancy the idea of being trapped aboard a vessel with 5500 people I wouldn’t normally want to spend any time with, while they infect the buffet with Botulism or Noravirus, then being forced to inhale their collective farts through the air-con, while paying a shit load of money for the privilege.
So I suggested a touring holiday of Norway (with a side trip to Copenhagen).

Looks like I have some driving to do in June
Fly to Oslo,
Oslo to Alesund via Lillehammer
Alesund to Bergen (via Gieranger),
Bergen to Stavanger,
Stavanger to Kristiansand,
And back to Oslo.
Train to Copenhagen,
Fly home.

So far it’s going to cost about the same.

We love a driving holiday, but this will be the first for a while, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Ideally, so is Narelle :crossed_fingers:

I have been informed that we’re either doing

London → Paris → Luxembourg by train

or

Fly to Stockholm
Train to Oslo
Train to Bergen
Fly back

I’ll just nod along and enjoy either.

Well, that euphoria didn’t last very long

N has changed her mind again. All Norway plans cancelled until next year (after we have retired).
Instead, we are taking advantage of my work discount on rail travel.

London - Lille
Lille - Strasbourg
Strasbourg - Colmar
Colmar - Freiburg
Freiburg - Mannheim
Mannheim - Luxembourg
Luxembourg - Brussels
Brussels - London.

All stops are for one or two nights.

As I’ve already booked cheap fares for the Eurostar legs, this is NOT being cancelled

I’ve been bombarded recently on FB with info about European rail trips mainly, it seems, because the Italian FrecciaRossa are offering a high speed link from Paris down to Milan at non silly prices & then of course, on their network you can easily & cheaply get further South to Rome, Naples etc.

Not that route but a rail based holiday does appeal.

I had a great time 10 or so years ago doing that around some of the ex soviet block countries. I remember Budapest to Bratislava being particularly cheap to the point we thought the prices were wrong and picked the more expensive one out of worry. Turns out we got our own cabin 1st class and a steak, potato cake and some jam meal. Think it was £7 each or something silly like that.
