Hoops Speaker Roundabout

Well in the last 6-9 months I’ve been pretty happy with the Tannoy Stirlings, and forsee them staying a while. :scream: I still have the ATC SCM10s too, as well as the little Scanspeak 10F Frugelhorn Lites.
Now I have the shed pretty much sorted, its time for a couple of projects. I have the plinth to make for the Denon DP-3000, as well as at some point, a nice simple plinth for the Thorens TD-160.

I’ve been doing some rationalisation on the DIY speaker bits, and I have still been searching for a nice pair of Goodmans Axiom 301s since the last pair I bought were damaged in transit and not usable…

A good pair of 301s are hard to find but I’ve taken a punt on a less well known model, the Axiom 10. As you would expect its a 10" Axiom without a whizzer cone compared to the 12" 201/301 models. The 12" were orientated towards Commercial/PA use where as the 10" was really for the domestic market.

The Axiom 10s from what I can see were from the early 60s, there was a TwinAxiom 10 model, with as you would expect, a small whizzer cone. Later there were the 110 and 112 models, the 110 replaced the Axiom 10 and the 112 the same, but with a more powerfull magnet (1.6T vs 1.35T on the 10). The 112 models seem even more rare.

With a higher Qts of 1.1 I am planning another aperiodic enclosure, the brochure recommends around 5000 cu inches, so planning around the 75-80 Litre mark. This is also around the right size for a Axiom 301 ported enclosure too so I’ll make a front baffle that can be swapped out as/when I find a pair of 301s in the future. Its also a similar size required for the Supravox 165-2000 mk2 (aperiodic) and 285GMF (ported) which is cool if I did want to try those again in the future.

I’ve just been putting them through thier paces in mono, in a simple open baffle made from some spare insulation board I had left over from the shed build, certainly sounding promising!
Nice and smooth, supprising amount of top end considering the age/size. With a Qts of around 1.1, Fs 48 Hz and Qms 7.5 they actually do a good impression in the bass, nice and punchy as you would expect with Open Baffles. With an Mms ~11g they are reasonably efficient, DATS V2 says ~90db/2.83v but measuring the frequency response next to the Tannoys (93db/2.83v) at the same volume level/distance they are around 6dB more sensitive in the midrange and treble.

I do have a pair of Sica 1" horn tweeters I bought for the Axiom 301s (pictured below). Planning to keep the parts cost under £200 as a project, I’ll tweak first with the MiniDSP 2x4HD but the plan is to make a simple passive crossover, probably around the 7-8kHz range and use them with the Decware Zen, which is the driver for this project.
