I bought one today. Have to collect tomorrow. No idea what I’ll do with it!
Not Vitavox cabinet but Vitavox innards. They made their drawings available back in the 50’s.

Bought what?

Whoa the pic just came up.
You still have your big DIY horns, JBL, supravox, S2, etc?
Yup. No room for this!
Will make room at mine!
Deal
Surely a video will suffice.
So was this planned purchase or impulse buy
Very underrated Captain Beefheart album
No I don’t know the recording or own it.
So you can’t tell there is a speed difference?
I’d point out (the obvious) that people will generally favour louder clips so if you are going to go down this route at least need to match the maximum volume…
It came up for sale locally. Part of a family house clearance. The grandfather (radio engineer) had built the cab (quite nicely) back in the 50’s & the family are now clearing the house. Sadly only 1 of them. Did have some nice R2R DG tapes too
No I prefer playing a system up to its comfortable point - a lower distortion system will play louder more easily. There is no reason to lower the volume to match a higher distortion system. Same when you swap components. A lower noise component will let you turn the volume up compared to a higher noise component.
If there is a mismatch in drivers, where one sounds louder than the other, you will adjust for volume of the louder driver. Else the bass will be overwhelming or the highs will be shouty. A better matched speaker will let you turn up volume more.
I’d agree, unless you are taking videos and then try to objectively compare…
As I said I am pretty sure from your posting that I would have similar preferences but I do think from your videos, as above, that they are limited and really only a token indication of flavour…
Did you listen to the Techdas vs Vyger?
Or the dual FLH vs the Wilson?
one thing in this thread I can go along with
Hahah, a video to me only offers ‘a sip of the juice’ - A hint, a soupcon, a potential indication. e.g the 817’s above strike me as ballsy. I would, rightly or wrongly, expect them to deliver quite a physical mid bass effect. I would also reserve any actual ‘judgement’ on hearing them in person, preferably in my room!
For all the clowning on here the potential alternatives: "I’d rather trust a friend / read about it / hear it at a show / see the measurements… These things are also, in varying degrees, indicators and imperfect.
To get close to any kind of meaningful truth you’d need to stray into Mik territory. Buy it all, live with it, listen to it in your own room, paired with other known / owned equipment, with your own records. This level of experience carries clout IMHO, the rest is not fully formed / informed to greater or lesser degrees.
Wut?
Matt, they are the ballsiest of speakers I have heard along with three other dual FLHs of similar design. Ground up, midbass up sound, excellent integration with the upper driver, very coherent.
