House Renovation 🏡

i agree , lets have a working party !!

Did a similar size property in Jersey, lets just say they built everything quicker for the London Olympics than it took us to get done.

Looks a cracking project

yes , i spent 7 months labouring over a house which was covered in artex floor to ceiling , it was an utter nightmare and have probably reduced my life expectancy due to inhalation of the asbestos in the artex . no wonder these artex removal guys charge so much . who invented that stuff anyway…

Been around a while, and still in business.

wow , thanks for that . hopefully it has not got asbestos in now !!

Best thing to do if you’re not sure if it’s post-2000 is to plaster over it. My mum’s house has every single ceiling done in it, fucking awful stuff.

There’s only a tiny amount of asbestos on site, and it’s impregnated into the small bit of laminate flooring in the upstairs bathroom. It’s minor enough that it can just get taken to the tip, although they still recommend wearing a mask for removing it.

There’s also a load of lead pain in one of the many layers of paint on the fireplace in the hallway. Again, just a basic breathing mask required for removal.

Is this finished yet?

Not finished yet. Still moving stuff up from the old house, probably won’t be finished until next weekend including the cleaning. Have also done an insane amount of strimming which is both knackering and satisfying in equal measure.

Have just discovered that neither the bath nor the kitchen sink actually run into the septic tank, and that the tank itself hasn’t been emptied in probably 20 years. The former was in part discovered by the bathwater from the kids this morning coming out of the sink in the kitchen and covering the floor, which was fun.

Have you spoken to the mairie about sewage? Most French villages have had to build mains drainage in the last few years & lay pipes in every street. Or are you out in the country?

when i was a kid we had a septic tank , we got charged water rates as usual and we had all the bathwater diverted through pipes down the bottom of the garden . we couldnt flush the toilet unless absolutely necessary . ah the joys of cess pits .

sounds like you are having fun !!

We’re properly out in the sticks here. To give you an idea, our house is the blue marker (and the big grey line is the TGV track).

They’re normally pretty good out here on the whole, not least because a lot more of France uses them than you get in the UK, so the product development incentive is there.

In this case, it’s simply a very, very old fosse that’s not been maintained properly, and will also now not come even close to conforming to the regulations any more.

I also note competition down the road

Yeah, the quote pre-mortgage we had to make the fosse conform was about 6,500€, although if the powers that be decree, we may need to put in a more expensive option.

It’s something we were well aware needed doing when we bought thank fuck, as that would have been a nasty surprise otherwise.

As above ,The mairie will help, and the best thing is to get them on your side.
