How do you feel? (Part 1)

Thanks. That’s really helpful.

The local convenience store is shuttered this morning, no explanatory notice on the shutters or personnel ringing bells calling unclean. The first real casualty I’ve seen, presumably.

You’re welcome.

Ah shit…it’s effecting everyone :frowning:.

Yup, I was in Aldi calling in for some bits we forgot last Saturday on our ‘normal’ weekly shop the other evening on the way home from work, one chap had a trolley literally bursting at the seams full of lager, whisky, vodka, wine and NO FOOD, I dread to think what the bill was at the till

I’m in the service industry, most of the fitters/mechanics are hourly paid so will work until they are told they can’t.

There would be no way for me to wfh.

Our customers are mostly food factories, I can’t see these closing, so we won’t be.

My wife’s school will remain open as a hub so she will be working.

My 14yo son is overjoyed.

I suppose that we are in a semi self isolation, which is basically reducing contact as much as possible, as the mrs is a community nurse this is nigh on impossible at the moment. On the plus side, driving is a joy with much reduced traffic, I can take the boy out in the car to Delamere Forest, have a good relaxed walk and meet no one, it’s great at the moment. However, as soon as parents have the same idea with the schools closed, my nirvana will disappear.

It will be interesting to see what will be on the list of essential industries. They’re talking about medical staff and supermarket delivery drivers, but when you look at what is needed to keep things going for a few months, the list gets quite long.

I’m reminded of the Golgafrinchans in H2G2:

The Golgafrinchans rid themselves of an entire useless third of their population. The story was that they would build three Ark ships. Into the A ship would go all the leaders, scientists and other high achievers. The C ship would contain all the people who made things and did things, and the B Ark would hold everyone else, such as hairdressers and telephone sanitisers. They sent the B ship off first, but of course, the other two-thirds of the population stayed on the planet and lived full, rich and happy lives until they were all wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone.

Sam is now off School, not enough teachers, Amy is at School so far…

Donna works as a Pharmacy Technician - it’s basically chaos as far as I tell, hopefully she’ll fall into this front line staff thing and Amy will have the option of going in to school to get looked after as my Mum & Dad can no longer do this (for their own good).

I work in the hydraulics industry, it is having an impact for goods from Italy and China etc. Also we now have a fitter off with symptoms…

My 8-weekly prescription came around yesterday. The counter at Boots was short-staffed but coping. Panic-buying of prescription meds really isn’t a thing. The GPs are awkward enough under normal circumstances if you try to build up a buffer, as many of us found out in the long run-up to Brexit. So BAU supply will need to be preserved.

Bit worried about my partner who is in the vulnerable group still teaching. She teaches a practical subject so in close contact with students. Voiced her concerns with personnel wallah, response was - speak to your GP. On another note I had a client cancel 6 - 8 weeks work I had booked in due to stock market collapse.

Tesco in Lerwick has followed suit and introduced buying restrictions. As I’m only a few days away from my monthly shop, that gives me a problem. A three item limit means I can’t buy enough to last me a month, by some distance.

Do I now start to go weekly (110 mile round trip, 4 ferries, 9 hour round trip, £30+ cost) or go round the store 4 or 5 times - if I can get away with it? I’m not stockpiling and I don’t need bog rolls, Paracetamol, hand gel, long life milk etc, this would just be my normal monthly shop.

I do have a possible contingency plan. As a trustee of the Fetlar Museum, I have access to a trade card for a wholesale outlet in Lerwick, I’m going to borrow that and see what they have in stock which might solve my problem, otherwise it’s going to have to be a weekly trip I think.

Bugger!

Is there any means to contact them ahead of going to see what can be done?

I went to Bookers yesterday. Packed and shelves empty. Limited purchases of essential items.

I’ve tried ringing them and get the usual 5 options. It doesn’t matter which one you choose, there’s just a recorded message that says something like, due to the coronavirus situation we are unable to put you through to an operator etc. then the phone goes dead.

especially since you’ve announced it on a public website. See you all there later
