Jim's amp quest - the blind leading the blind

If looking for an amp for horns I’d try to hear a SET made by SJS. Nice and quiet, very dynamic and they do bass which many SET’s don’t. If you got your Goto’s from Kevin he may be able to lend you one for a demo? I have one of his older 2A3 PSE amps as well as a PSE 300B that Simon is refurbing for me and am really pleased with them. I’m using the 2A3 amp with Loth-X Minstrels at the moment and can’t hear any noise with my head by the driver.

Making x4 GPA 15" drivers boogie with an SET is tricky, they like more power than most SET’s offer and probably ‘grip’ better with push pull. That’s not to say 300B’s wouldn’t be preferable with the Mids / Hi’s… A multi amp solution may be the way to go here…

Yes I did. I will give him a bell to see what he has available. The best I’ve heard with the Gotos so far is @browellm 's Art Audio Argento 300b, which also came from Definitive.

Yep, from what I’ve heard with them so far, 20-30w seems to be the sweet spot.

Do you know which particular GPA’s they are Jim? Most of the larger drivers I know like PP more than SET,

Err…15" black ones. :joy:

Not had them out of the cabs Matt, so not sure.

Go for the golden hernia and get one out the cab, there are several different GPA 15" the model will reveal the power requirement which will in turn guide the amp choice.

It has been suggested that the GPA bass cabs are driven with a separate amp, but not sure if this could be achieved without modding the xovers.
Could I run a separate amp from the spare outputs on the Preda direct to the GPA cabs (like with the sub) bypassing the xover? The Preda has 3 outputs 2xXLR and 1xRCA.

I haven’t looked at their insta but why would it be a bad thing? Seems to be working for Ojas.

Poorly worded on my part, nothing wrong with going for the new market. The ‘Not sure’ bit comes from the Tannoy / horn combo pictured

The Preda’s functionality is squarely up Murray’s Straße

the Art Audio Argento is a 16W PSE 300B amp, just saying…

the Definitive mods make it a lot nicer, but no more powerful.

this i suspect will be the answer, something grunty on the bass cabs either PP valves or Class A SS, and something more delicate higher up, say SE triodes. Would probably need knowledge of the Xovers and some mods to make it work nicely.

I seem to recall that Sakuma san hosted audio concerts for his direct heating systems in Japan and Europe back in the day, but I dont think he managed cross over into the mainstream press.

I have the Cymer audio southern star se 35 set monos I bought from dave that do the higher power set thing, happy to loan them for a try to see if they work for you? jury is out for me with the jbl k2s as sometimes lamenting the loss of my 350w CJ premier although the mids are def better with the Cymer

ANJ M7 output 1 >> Jeff Korneff 45 amp >> xover >> mids and treble
ANJ M7 output 2 >> Krell KSA100 >> xover >> subs

What about the sub? My SVS doesn’t have high level inputs.

Was the Audio Tekne “style” amp you were making SE or PP? I think all the actual Audio Tekne amps are PP if I remember right. Maybe PP 300B, four per side, on the bass cabs and SE 300B on mids/highs?

Divider network across bass speaker terminals to low level input?

Though you mentioned 30W being the sweet spot, if you’re ever down in this area you are most welcome to give my Art Audio Diavolo (with Border Patrol PSU) power amp a try if you like.
