Jim's amp quest - the blind leading the blind

Yes, just remove the connecting lead. It looks like the bottom section is the bass XO, and it takes the bottom input and goes to the bottom output. There’s no other connection that I can see.

The top input feeds the three compression drivers, with the middle and top sections.

So once you remove the connector, you can use two amps. They will need the same gain, so one or both will need a volume control (you could just use a passive pre of you wanted).

In an ideal world you might want to remove the L-pads, which are resistor networks that reduce the output of the compression drivers. But without being able to verify the exact values, it’s probably too complicated for now. Take the easy win and get more amps :sunglasses:

Oh, I should add: when you remove the connector, do verify with a multimeter that there is no connection between the bass inputs and the rest, just to be extra safe.

You might be gobsmacked to learn that I do actually own a multimeter

Do you also own a fire extinguisher? :grinning:

If you manage to dig a bass driver out, you will note on the magnet cap the GPA model. This may be handy to instruct what amp is optimal for LF duties.

All roads lead to an amp per channel and 4/5 ways, if truly serious :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve spent a good while getting the tapped horns to really sing.
In the beginning the thunder was enough:).
Getting them articulate and tuneful was the next step.
For 15" drivers like in tapped horns you want an amp with huge damping factor (> 250), and steep 6th order X/O on low pass.

Wooly otherwise.
Mid bass horns 12 or 15", 100-200 or so, 4th order works well on high pass.
The cones will only move a fraction of a mm at normal listening levels, but they require precise control.

Compression drivers etc are happy on little SET amps.

Missing a lot with a system that doesn’t do deep bass. 60-80Hz is mid bass really.

Two will be fine thank you. I am serious but want to retain my sanity. This amp quest is brane damaging already.

Any suggestions?

Ask GPA when you know what you have.

Why so? Is this a tapped horn thing? I ask because I get tight, tuneful, foundation-shaking bass with a power amp that has <0.1 that damping factor driving just two ported-box 15" drivers, which - in theory - should be harder to drive…

This is what I use. Damping factor is only 200 so may not be sufficient for your setup. Certainly produce plenty of bass for me. Currently The Orb are making my foundations quake.

I reckon there is a good chance the results will be good with a single Pass power amp and whatever flavour of pre suits.

Be worth trying before hacking stuff up.

Measuring stuff would be good too. Always a good place to start is measuring stuff. This thread needs more Serge.

I don’t do measuring stuff. Life is just too feckin’ short. I did read the feckin’ manual though. Nelson Pass writes an entertaining manual…
