Yeah I wouldn’t say any of those were a good reason. Just a slight inconvenience.
This is partly where my question stems from - the phrase “a good reason” seems to be ludicrously vague for a situation where you need to be deciding whether someone is breaking the law. That’s a fault of the law writers, not the people who have to enforce of course. But it’s also not the only instance I can think of where the law is vague to the point it’s abusable.
It’s only like that because some people have good reason to use a lock knife ( as an example), where as your average stabby stabby thug doesn’t. I suspect its a law that only ever gets used when police are enforcing stop and search or searching a car full of druggies after a roadside stop.
Yes very vague. So it’s up to the police to act for safety reasons and then the courts to decide if they have a reasonable excuse to possess the knife
And these make good sense to me. Over-prescriptive laws tend to have loopholes found, and it all goes badly wrong then.
Nope, hard disagree. If I as a civilian cannot get a clear and concrete conclusion that a given activity is legal or not, it’s a piss-poor piece of writing. See the Obscene Publications Act as a prime example. All it states is that you cannot possess material “likely to be considered offensive by the general public”. It’s been used on a number of occasions by the CPS to bring lawsuits for the purpose of damaging someone’s reputation even though a jury might decide they are not going to deem the specific material offensive.
The other corollary is that what the law boils down to is "do those 12 members of the jury think that’s obscene (or a good reason to carry a knife, etc), or not. It leads to a very inconsistent application of the law based on the personal views of the jury members.
Inconsistency is a direct result of deliberately built in ambiguity.
We can agree to disagree. If the law is too prescriptive, people simply find a way around it: “I need my 12” knife for my scout camp tomorrow, so I have it here in the town centre as I’m going straight from here, and it would be unsafe to leave it with my belongings" or whatever. The judge/jury needs to be able to call bollocks to that sort of thing.
Yeah, it’s an interesting one, and I speak as someone with zero knowledge of writing laws.
I suspect there’s still some scope for at least better guidelines within it. More structure to the sort of thing that would probably constitute “good reason” for example.
Just bought these at knife stall at the Norfolk artisan fair. They were end-of-line, so he did an amazing deal…
We got that sharpener with the flint and flame set we bought a few years back
How has yours lasted? - I’m amazed how well it works - just did about half a dozen passes on an existing dull (but not really blunt or damaged) knife and it’s now like a razor…seems very flimsy, lightweight plastic tho
I am currently well and truly down the rabbit hole of Japanese knives at the moment. The challenge is actually getting to hold the things before spending one’s hard earned cash on them.
Given my knife technique preference, I also think I want a Kitsuke rather than a more curved Gyoto or western style knife. And they seem quite thin of the ground. And that’s before we get to the fun of the 8 million different steel choices there are out there.
I have stopped looking.
I have found the knives I have are all I really need.
I was especially pleased to get an old carving knife set sharpened up and it is lovely to use.
It was a wedding present to my parents in 1952 and made in Sheffield (Talbot Works, Harwood Street,) by Fry & Wigfull. The firm ceased trading in the 70s.
I am jealous!
Seems ok
The little cover falls off but it just clips back on
The knives are razor sharp after 6 strokes back and forth but mine don’t seem to hold the edge as long as I’d expect
I’ve got the 8" Chef’s knife from Flint and Flame, and have found the same issue. Hence looking elsewhere now.
What maker? Flint & Flame are a retailer.
