Knives and Sharpening

Slightly OT but I always carry a sommelier’s knife / waiter’s friend in my wash kit for when I’m stranded somewhere and want to bust into a bottle of booze.

I recently, in circumstances too annoying to recount, lost the one that I’ve used for the last 20 years so I’m on the lookout for a new one.

I’m happy to wait until I see something that I like, but in the meantime, any suggestions?

Corkscrew, bottle opener, small blade, and preferably something that could double as a screwdriver.

Waiter’s friends are ten a penny, but I’m wondering if there’s anything more “multi tool” out there.

I was given a Le Creuset corkscrew/sommellier knife three or four Christmases ago. It’s a lovely thing with nicely figured wooden inserts. Good heft.

No screwdriver though :frowning:

Thanks folks.

TBH it looks like a choice between a waiter’s friend that is good at opening wine bottles, or a penknife with a corkscrew that isn’t so good but does other stuff.

Just thinking about it, IIRC the wife has a particularly hench Japanese waiter’s friend.

Might try to steal it and just accept the inevitable battering :grinning:

I am informed that it’s Italian, not Japanese, it’s THE BEST waiter’s friend, and it’s not happening, ever

You said something to her about it, rather than just filching it? Fucking amateur.

This should do the trick:

Compact and bijou.

Ask her how many jackets = 1 small knife? :grinning:

I have a slightly different model, excellent - pricey but it’s not like you’re buying them every week.

TBF, I have several others including ratchet styles which can be more practical. But I love my Laggy :+1:

This fits the bill, and is reassuringly spendy.

That’s a beautiful object, but given that I had to bin my last one at security in Heathrow as my hold luggage suddenly became carry-on, I’m aiming for slightly less balls out on the price

I will likely end up with a Victorinox Waiter (TBH I think we already have one) or Spartan

A £400 Swiss Army knife. That’s why I love this place :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I’d recommend

Have just chucked a set of these onto my 50th gift list

Feels a bit shameful to admit, but I’ve never mastered my whetstone and if these do as well as the reviews say, then I’ll be happy enough
