Lyrics that stick

He’d sell water to a drowning man

The Mountain Goats Hostages:

There’s a team up on the rooftop
Good luck to the team
When you know you’ll never make it out alive
You kind of get to live out your dream

I said, You see these two cold fingers
These crooked fingers I show

The Mountain Goats Tidal Wave:

“It’s not the mutiny that gets written down in the diary
It’s the manifest
Forgotten cargo in obsolete measurements
Anybody’s guess”

From Chris Wood’s ‘None The Wiser -

“Someone’s daughter’s selling phone sex
Just to pay her student loan back,
She does her best to emulate the sound of choking…
It’s not the strongest that go forward
It’s the ones that can adapt -
You can bet Charles Darwin wasn’t joking…”

This verse really speaks to me, It’s like Julien Baker has been inside my head:

Blacked out on a weekday
Is there something that I’m trying to avoid
Start asking for forgiveness in advance
For all the future things I will destroy

That way I can ruin everything
When I do, you don’t get to act surprised
When it finally gets to be too much
I always told you, you could leave at any time

Until then I’ll split the difference
Between medicine and poison
Take what I can get away with
While it burns right through my stomach

I’m telling my own fortune
Something I cannot escape
I can see where this is going
But I can’t find the brake

Well the judge he holds a grudge
He’s gonna call on you
But he’s badly built
And he walks on stilts
Watch out he don’t fall on you

For some reason that song and particularly that verse has been an ear worm for me for days.

Timing like a clock when I rock the hip-hop
Top notch is my stock on the soap box
I’ve got more rhymes than I’ve got grey hairs
And that’s a lot because I’ve got my share

Well, it may be the Devil or it may be the Lord
But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

Well everybody’s got a secret, son
Something that they just can’t face
Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it
They carry it with them every step that they take

Till some day they just cut it loose
Cut it loose or let it drag 'em down
Where no one asks any questions
Or looks too long in your face
In the darkness on the edge of town
In the darkness on the edge of town

Huge orange flying boat rises off a lake
Thousand-year-old petroglyphs doing a double take
Pointing a finger at eternity
I’m sitting in the middle of this ecstasy

One of these taken as inspiration apparently, Kelley.

Yes. I love the idea of native petroglyphs watching the takeoff in amazement.

Leo Sayer changed the lyric to dinosaurs when he covered the song. Not nearly as effective.

Ain’t it clear that I just can’t fit
Yes, I believe that it’s time for us to quit
But when we meet again, introduced as friends
Please don’t let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world

Stevie nicks did a great cover of that on street angel. She knows.

There’s a picture opposite me
Of my primitive ancestry
Which stood on rocky shores
And kept the beaches shipwreck free
Though I respect that a lot
I’d be fired if that were my job
After killing Jason off
And countless screaming Argonauts
