This thread is the equivalent of dogging, mildly fascinating but mostly tawdry and vomit inducing.

Speaking of vomit inducing the wife bought some puff pastry mince pies which are dry, stale, insipid things which is surprising for cuntrose as they usually chuck some weird shit in their pies for shits and giggles. These however were bought specifically for their lack of alcohol content which begs the question, well what’s the fucking point then?

Passed on the usual optimism of buying a palette of pies from Costco earlier. They are too big, too sweet and have a weird lid made of cake.

As some cunt on here is far too fond of saying. Rong.

Interesting map. There is a big, deeply buried granitic batholith under Sussex, Kent and La Manche (fwiw, go deep enough and there’s something like it under most continental landmasses, but usually many miles deep), but it only seems to make itself known where it’s overlain by Upper Chalk, presumably because the gas can percolate through the porous rock. I did not previously know this.

The other interesting pattern is the band which snakes NE besides the Bristol Channel and Severn and arcs northwards through the midlands into Yorkshire - that’s very strongly correlated with the Permo-Triassic outcrop, all sedimentary, but which must contain a huge amount of detrital minerals - eroded from ancient batholiths - that are still emitting Radon. This also I did not know. :nerd_face:

Yes you can see the arc of it in the shape of the north downs over north Kent. Isn’t the Weald all granite also? I get the chalk thing but would have thought gas would escape through soil/ clay too.

The Weald rocks are a mix of clays, marls and sandstones. It’s clays that tend to be least porous, but even they can contain emissive particles. Porosity in rocks is generally very slight - it’s the sheer amount of time involved that allows fluids and gases to percolate to any significant extent.

The short half life of Rn (92 hours for the common isotope) means that it needs to move pretty quickly from where it appears to where we care about it if there’s going to be any significant amount present. So if the source has an inactive capping layer over it then that layer has to be either pretty porous or pretty thin or some combination of both.

No reading required, they all are.

I think the only important decay series starts with U-238 and gets to Ra-226 and the radon, Rn-222, comes from the alpha-decay of that. U-238 has a half-life comparable with the age of the earth, so as far as we’re concerned there’s a fixed supply of radon and if we were in direct contact with the U-238 then the radon wouldn’t appear to have a half-life since in equilibrium it would, by definition, be being produced as quickly as it was decaying.

But the radium is pretty much immobile, of course, and the inactive layer which separates us from it (i.e. from the granite) would, if it was sufficiently thick and impermeable, slow the radon’s progress so it would decay before it got to us.
