Mate wants to spend “up to £150” on a new or good condition used phono stage.
I have no idea what to recommend. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Find a Musical Fidelity LX2 LPS on the used market. They often come up for around this. Circuit is based on the much more expensive MX-VYNL, and in future it can also do MC with adjustable loading plugs. Sounded great in my system previously and tbh I’m not sure the upgrade to the MX bought much if any improvement.

And if you can find a cheeky cheap 24v power supply, it’ll go into EPS mode, which is a feature they never publicised: they intended to make an external psu for it, but you can get the enhanced power supply mode to kick in with any 24v wall wart

Enhanced…. I think is the term they wanted to go with, who knows, they never did it. It’s also unclear what it does to the circuit, but i guess overload margin and headroom are theories

Try a fosi box x5 …el cheapo …if he don’t like it …he can send it back free … I have one and it didn’t go back. However my hearing is buggered …the only other mm phono amps I have are MF XLPs ..don’t like …and the wiim ultra phono input which I don’t like …
I have a Linto for MC …but I broke my DL103 …which I was happy with … I may get another. I’m using a VM95ML which I like.
The build quality on the fosi is really good …feels like an expensive bit of audio kit to use. Variable gain …MC/mm…has muting relay when you fiddle with settings…

Audio checker nurse people say it’s good for 67 year old .
…but it’s gone over 8k …however in my own weird audio world I still have preferences. I know I didn’t like the XLP when cat scarers made me jump .

The updated Mk3 is currently on for £200 in a few places and there is very little that can get anywhere near the performance that thing offers.

Fosi seems very well rated online.
Tempted to try one due to the gain features,as my cartridge is a bit quiet with either the quad input card,and micromega phono stage
