The local name for it is “Dog” pretty much any pub would know what you wanted if you asked for a bottle of Dog. Half Broon and half cider was a Dog Bite.
Contrary to popular belief there wasn’t a special ward in Newcastle Infirmary for Dog drinkers, however many ended up in that place.
Clint Eastwood allegedly loves the stuff but I don’t think it is really the same drink that it used to be.
It must be served chilled and in a half glass, topping up regularly. You can get pissed very easily that way too.
I agree it isn’t the finest beer in the World but I have some interesting memories of serious sessions on it, along with some complete blanks too…
My first introduction to “dog” was at a party where the guy had an old old enamel bathtub in the garden filled with bottles bottles of newcy brown and ice.
That was my goto beer for a good few years.

Darkness At the Edge of Town.
1 msr gin
1 msr aperol
4 msr porter
mix gin and aperol with ice, stir until chilled. Strain into glass and top up with porter. Garnish with orange wedge.
