....more armchair politics (Part 1)

The education secretary, Gavin Williamson, said: “We know Latin has a reputation as an elitist subject which is only reserved for the privileged few. But the subject can bring so many benefits to young people, so I want to put an end to that divide.”

I did 3 years of Latin at my comprehensive (it was still widely spoken at the time) but I have yet to notice any benefit.

So Latin remains elitist by being introduced to only 40 schools out of c. 3500

So was Sumerian and Elamite.

What a strange phrase … vagina is a perfectly good Latin word, as is vulva. They also called the latter cunnus which was reckoned to be vulgar.

One of the very few things I remember from learning Latin at school was that they had a compound word nobiscum meaning with (cum) us (nobis), but they went out of their way not to say cumnobis because it sounded too much like cunno bis (twice a cunt).

I will be using this in my Christmas cards this year. May even introduce it to some work emails

£4M…. How much were the school dinners they refused (twice) to provide over holidays?

You can quote Cicero about it, apparently

The translation of the two words is a bit ambiguous. It seems it could also mean ‘twice into the cunt’.

So Carrie is expecting a second sprog sired by Johnson. Good to know that it’s not only the country he’s capable of fucking during the pandemic.

It was google translate, I don’t speak latin and I was hoping that “stupid vagina” could be interpreted to its true intent.

Yes, I don’t know how they’ve come up with it, but they have. The three words mean ‘natural’, ‘his’ or ‘hers’, and ‘should’. The last word is supposed to be tied to a verb to make ‘should go’ or ‘should fight’ or ‘should weep’ or whatever. It doesn’t really make sense without one. When the Romans wanted to say vagina they said ‘vagina’ (they also said it when they wanted to say scabbard - needs must for the poor bloody infantry patrolling Hadrian’s wall, I suppose …).

diutissime; i non legitur

I expect these geniuses in government actually believe that more Latin at secondary schools = job done re levelling up.

Alea iacta est…

Afaik, most or all pre uni schools offer Latin in NL and D, but the uptake is low.
At least here in our village in D, our youngest was asked to reconsider as too many applied for French. Then she and a friend of her switched to Latin. Nothing elitist, nor would it make a difference to the quality of education.

The remark from DfE on Latin having a positive impact on language training and classics, is sheer stupidity after killing UK participation in Erasmus.

Just don’t write this to anybody in NL, as most will wonder how you managed those typos in your wish to enjoy some soft drugs.

How much more of this shit can a nation suffer.
“Thousands of pupils to study Latin.”
Fuck off!
40 schools out of 3500 with what will be a small uptake as there aren’t enough hours in the school week to properly teach the core subjects with a few options as it is.
Mary Beard can fuck off as well- if you’re so interested in children getting history enrichment why not press for a greater uptake of history which has seen a massive drop in pupils studying due to pressure to study foreign languages and triple science.
I can guess what the 40 state schools will be (can’t find a published list) the selective ones where having a 10 million pound house in the catchment area is the minimum for an offer of a place. Stinking, separatist, loathsome, feudal cunts.

Seems to me to be a Boris Johnson/Jacob Rees-Cunt ego trip.
